host family

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A host family is a family that takes in a young person from outside the area for a certain period of time as part of a student exchange , study abroad or a major event (e.g. World Youth Day , church convention ).

Host families usually do this free of charge and voluntarily in order to get to know people from other cultures and language areas, to fulfill their children's long-awaited brother / sister wish (for a limited period of time) or simply for a good cause. In some cases (e.g. in countries with high living costs) the host families are also paid a subsidy as a small compensation, which, however, usually does not cover the expenses.

Paid stays with host families are known as homestays .
