Sex scandal 2011/12

On May 3, 2012, the Anti-Corruption Commission revealed that several UNAM lecturers were giving students better grades in exchange for sexual services, which constitutes a high level of academic fraud, not to mention the sexual abuse of wards .

Such rumors have been linked to the university since August 2011, before they could ultimately be proven by sending relevant SMS between a lecturer and a student to the Anti-Corruption Commission. The Namibian opposition party RDP criticized the incidents at the UNAM as early as September 6, 2011, calling the university an “academic brothel”. On September 7th, the Namibian daily newspaper The Namibian announced that the UNAM management had always been aware of the incidents. This was followed by the first internal UNAM investigations, which were discontinued in December 2011 without any results.

After the anti-corruption commission had apparently uncovered the scandal in May 2012, the UNAM restarted internal investigations and came to the conclusion, as in 2011, that none of its lecturers would be involved in the scandal. At the same time, however, the Anti Corruption Commission came to a completely different conclusion and announced that numerous lecturers would be involved in the sex scandal. As a result, Namibian Deputy Education Minister David Namwandi announced on May 14, 2012 an emergency meeting with the management of the university and made it clear that the Anti-Corruption Commission would be entrusted with the investigation of the case.
