Welcome to Oranjemund (2018)

Oranjemund is a town in the constituency of the same name in the ǁKaras region in southern Namibia with around 3900 inhabitants.

Oranjemund is located on the north side of the mouth of the Oranje (hence the name) into the Atlantic , which here forms the border with South Africa with its north bank . Opposite, on the south side of the river, is Alexander Bay ( Afrikaans Alexanderbaai ), to which Oranjemund is connected via the Ernest-Oppenheimer Bridge . Oranjemund owes its origin to the diamond mining in northern diamond area .

The road connection from Rosh Pinah to Oranjemund (DR118) runs north of the Oranje.

Henry Edward Coetzee from SWAPO has been Mayor since March 23, 2012 .

Status and Politics

status

The mining town was privately owned by the diamond company NAMDEB until August 1, 2011 and was run by the “Oranjemund Town Managemen Company”. Namdeb provided the residents, who mostly work for him, with an exceptionally good infrastructure and a varied range of leisure activities due to its remote location.

In November 2009 it was announced that the proclamation as a Namibian city should be completed by mid-2010. However, the process continued through August 2011. The city was transferred from NAMDEB to the state, with NAMDEB continuing to secure the city's services until further notice. On March 23, 2012, a city council was set up for the first time, which has gradually taken over the administration. Until the end of this process (autumn 2017), Oranjemund will remain a closed city and access for non-residents is only possible with a special permit. The city was officially opened to the public on October 21, 2017.

history

After Hans Merensky found diamonds at Alexander Bay, Oranjemund was founded in 1936 by Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa (CDM), which is part of the De Beers group and operates diamond mining .

With the increasing relocation of diamond production to the Atlantic ( offshore production ) and the associated plans to give up the diamond restricted area, Oranjemund has recently been handed over to local government as a first step and the city has been opened to the general public. Intensive agriculture and tourism facilities such as a luxury hotel are planned for the future.

Around 4 km south of the city is the small Oranjemund Airport with scheduled flights to and from Windhoek , Lüderitz and Cape Town as well as ferry connections to Lüderitz and Alexander Bay .

Oranjemund has a private hospital operated by the mining company NAMDEB . It is to be converted into a semi-public hospital by mid-2019, as the closest public hospital is in Lüderitz, 400 kilometers away.
