The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform ( MAWLR ; English Ministry of Agriculture, Water & Land Reform ) is the agriculture- , water - and land reform Ministry of Namibia . The Ministry was merged with the Ministry of Land Reform in 2020 , and forestry was outsourced to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism .

The ministry was founded in this division in 2005. It emerged from the "Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development" founded in 1990, the successor Ministry for "Rural and Regional Administration and Housing" founded in 1995 and the "Ministry for Agriculture, Water and Rural Development" founded in 2000.

The ministry has been headed by Minister Calle Schlettwein since March 23, 2020 .

In addition to the tasks of the directorates, the ministry offers services. This includes the sale of plants through our own tree nurseries and mushroom production .

Directorates

The ministry is divided into eight directorates:

  • The Directorate of Engineering and Extension is responsible for communication, advice and training for the agricultural sector in Namibia. It also develops plans for managing emergencies caused by drought , the nationwide irrigation of agricultural land and the legal basis for agricultural products.
  • The Directorate of Resource Management is the environmentally friendly development and use of the low water resources in Namibia, especially with a view to a socially and economically balanced development.
  • The more internally working Directorate of Research and Training (vResearch & Training) is responsible for the administration and training of employees within the ministry. In addition, external training opportunities in informal areas of agriculture are developed and the transfer to the national agricultural universities is carried out. Another focus is research in all areas of agriculture, water and forestry.
  • The Directorate of Veterinary Services is dedicated to maintaining animal health in order to maintain animal products at a level that enables them to be sold on a national and international level.
  • The task of the Directorate of Rural Water Supply is to spread the water supply as widely as possible in rural municipal areas .
  • The Directorate of General Services provides support to all other directorates. This includes the area of human resources , financial management , transport management and information exchange.
  • The Directorate of Planning is the link between the Ministry and the private sector . This includes the initiation of public-private partnerships and communication with agricultural associations in Namibia. The development of new legislation is another priority activity of the Directorate.
