The Gamsberg (the word part Gams comes from the Khoekhoegowab , a Khoisan language , and means closed ) is a 2347 m high table mountain in the Khomas region in Namibia . It consists largely of granite . Characteristic is the wide plateau area, which measures around 2500 m in north-south direction and is on average 800 m wide. About 2 km northeast is the Kleine Gamsberg with a very small plateau.
The Gamsberg is a natural monument and can be reached via the so-called Gamsberg Pass over the Hakos Mountains . However, the 2.3 square kilometer high summit plateau is largely owned by the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy , which is why it can only be visited with a special permit. In 2010 the International Amateur Observatory , which already operates an observatory at the foot of the mountain, put a telescope with a 71 cm aperture into operation on the summit plateau of the Gamsberg .
The mountain is now only accessible as part of a guided tour, which is offered on the surrounding guest farms . The foot of the mountain can be reached from the C26 via the D1278 and turn right at the Weener Farm. A narrow road leads to the Kleine Gamsberg before turning left at the northeastern end of the Gamsberg. From here a partly very steep road leads without safety in several narrow serpentines to the plateau. Only a few people are allowed to drive on this road.
On the summit plateau there is a cell phone mast of the local provider and about in the middle are observation huts with telescopes and IAS accommodation. From the edge of the plateau there are fantastic views of the Hakos Mountains, the surrounding landscape and the Namib Desert, more than 100 km away.
Not far from the Gamsberg is the HESS astronomical observation station
