The International Amateur Observatory (IAS) is an international non-profit association based in Heidelberg (Germany) that operates an observatory in Namibia . The IAS maintains the Gamsberg observatory on the 2350  m high plateau of the Gamsberg , including a 71 cm Newtonian telescope and within sight of it in the Hakos Mountains , at 1800  m , the Hakos observatory . The latter serves as a special guest observatory , it has three 50 cm telescopes in addition to other devices and has the observatory code 221.

The International Amateur Observatory offers amateur astronomers the opportunity to observe the southern sky with larger telescopes . For this, the conditions are considered optimal in a global comparison, as can be seen from numerous sky images published on the Internet, especially of the Milky Way . For this reason, the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy , which owns most of the mountain's summit area, planned a large observatory for this location.
