The Waterberg Plateau Park is a nature reserve established in Namibia in 1972 . It has an area of 405 square kilometers and takes up large parts of the Waterberg in the central northeast of Namibia .
Flora and fauna
The fauna and flora in the Waterberg Plateau Park is very diverse: 90 mammals , over 200 birds , 13 frogs , 3 turtles , 34 lizards , 45 snakes , approx. 140 lichens and 497 plant species have been observed here .
The nature reserve was created to protect the eland . Through resettlement, there are now also the two rhino species found in Namibia, wide mouth - and black rhino , the only proven healthy groups of African buffalo (in May 2018 about 1600), sable , horses - and Topi and leopards and cheetahs .
The Waterberg was a refuge for the last Cape Vultures in Namibia, which became extinct by the mid-2000s.
The vegetation in the park consists of bush and tree savannah.
tourism
In the national park at the foot of the Waterberg there is a state camp run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts . There are several short hiking trails around it. There are numerous other hiking trails with shelters on and up the Waterberg .
