Gross Barmen ( Otjiherero Otjikango ) is a spring in Namibia , 28 km west of Okahandja . It is a state recreational area . There are thermal baths and accommodation here. The area is a popular destination, especially the Windhoeker . The warm, sulphurous healing water is directed into an indoor and an outdoor pool.
The place - named after the headquarters of the Rhenish Mission at that time in Barmen (today part of Wuppertal ) - was founded by the missionaries Carl Hugo Hahn and Franz Heinrich Kleinschmidt as the first Herero mission station after the establishment of a mission site in nearby Okahandja around 1844 .
The Osonakuppe is located southeast of the village .
renovation
The Gross Barmen recreation area was closed between December 2010 and December 3, 2014 because extensive renovations and renovations were carried out. In addition to completely new accommodations, a large spa and wellness area and conference facilities were created.
