William Frans Van Impe (born February 15, 1949 ) is a Belgian civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

After completing his diploma, Van Impe was Edward E. De Beer’s research assistant at the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics at the University of Ghent from 1973 , where he received his doctorate with distinction in 1981. In 1982 he became a lecturer at the University of Ghent and in 1985 head of the soil mechanics laboratory (now the Geotechnical Laboratory). In 1991 he received a full professorship in Ghent. Since 1988 he has also been a professor at the Catholic University in Leuven. He has been with the AGE engineering office since 2006.

He dealt in particular with soil improvement, bored piles (about which he organized four international conferences in Ghent) and lateral loading of piles, environmental geotechnics (such as the spread of pollutants in the soil), geotechnical issues in the offshore area near the coast (he advised, among other things, on dredging work for artificial islands in the construction of Hong Kong Airport and in Singapore). He was on the geotechnical committee for the proposed bridge over the Strait of Messina .

From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice President of ISSMGE for Europe and from 2001 to 2005 its President. From 1997 to 2001 he was director of the Belgian geotechnical society. He was head of several technical committees of the ISSMGE, such as TC 14 (Dredging), TC 18 (Deep Foundations) and co-head of TC 5 (Environmental Geotechnics). In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from the San Simon University (UMSS) in Bolivia. In 1999 he was the first Terzaghi lecturer in Vienna. In 2007 he received the Szechy Prize in Budapest and in 2004 the De Beer Prize in Brussels and the Manuel Rocha Prize in Lisbon. He is director of the Belgian Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences. In 1997 he gave the first Vienna Terzaghi Lecture .
