State nature reserves in Sierra Leone are administered by the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) and established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS). However, many of the declared protected areas are actually managed locally and financed by international development aid funds and organizations such as BirdLife International . The national supporter is the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone .

9.39 percent of the land area and 0.54 percent of the sea area of ​​Sierra Leone are designated as protected areas according to the IUCN . According to the NPAA, eight land and seven water protection areas are planned with a share of 6.8 percent of the total area.

Protection status

There are seven types of state protected areas:

  3. Strict Nature Reserve (Strict Nature Reserve )
  4. Game Reserve ( Wildlife Reserve )
  5. No or Non - Hunting Forest Reserve
