Wildlife population in Sierra Leone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wildlife population in Sierra Leone has declined , mainly due to the civil war between 1991 and 2002 and the use of wild animals as bushmeat . The proclamation of new nature reserves in the country , including above all the Gola Rainforest National Park , is intended to counteract this trend. The conflict between humans and animals is (as of 2006) an increasing problem.

Sierra Leone is home to 147 species of mammals , at least 172 species of birds , 67 species of reptiles , 35 species of amphibians and 99 species of fish .

Counts and inventory

State-wide censuses of wild animals by state authorities have not taken place in Sierra Leone. International nature conservation associations conduct surveys on individual animal species in the country.

Extinct are among others the West African lion (world population about 400 animals), the Kob and the white rhinoceros as well as the West African hartebeest , roan antelope , sitatunga and giant eland . With up to 20 antelope species , Sierra Leone has a very large biodiversity in relation to the size of the country.

Below is the population of selected large wild animal species.
