Chimpanzee in Tacugama

Tacugama is the best known conservation project in Sierra Leone . With great international support, the largest chimpanzee population on earth is being protected. Above all, it is about the release of former "pet" chimpanzees . A chimpanzee law was passed in August 2007, banning chimpanzee ownership and trafficking in Sierra Leone. All animals must be returned to Tacugama. In 1981 there were around 2000 chimpanzees in Sierra Leone; today, based on a scientifically based census and estimate carried out in 2009 and 2010, there are more than 4000 chimpanzees.

Today more than 100 chimpanzees live in the sanctuary. There are also numerous species of birds and small animals.

The park

introduction

The reserve is in the immediate vicinity of Freetown near the small village of Barthurst in the Western Area Forest Reserve . Founded in 1995, the sanctuary, which was never closed even during the civil war, quickly developed into one of the world's most important sanctuaries for chimpanzees. Above all, orphans and chimpanzees given by their owners are looked after here and made fit for release into the wild. To date, no chimpanzee has been released into the wild as a suitable area is still being sought.

getting there

Tacugama can also be easily reached by car in about 30 minutes from Freetown (with the exception of the last 100 meters).

Accommodation and facilities

There is a visitor center where you can get information. In addition, signs and information signs have been set up throughout the area.

In May 2007 the small Tacugama Guest Lodge was opened. She offers some Bunaglows with their own bathroom and good facilities in the pristine nature. Camping is strictly forbidden.

activities

The employees of the protected area, some of whom have been working there since it was founded, offer excellent guided tours with very interesting and informative explanations. On the tour, for which you should take two to three hours, you will also pass a small but very informative information center or museum.

Entry into the protected area is the equivalent of around nine euros per person.
