The Mercedes-Benz M 273 engine is a gasoline engine with eight cylinders in a V arrangement .

General

The M 273 is the further development of the M 113 . He took over the cylinder spacing and arrangement from him. It is technically related to the V6-cylinder M 272 gasoline engine , which was created in the same development cycle. The engines mainly share the angle between the two cylinder banks and the distance between the individual cylinders.

The M 273 made its debut in the S-Class in September 2005 . The engine has since been used in the E-Class and CLS , in the S and R-Class , also in the CL , SL and CLK , as well as the ML , GL and G off-road vehicles .

Problems

Basically, this engine is considered extremely reliable.

At the same time, early models (up to around September 2006) had problems with a deflection gear in the chain drive of the timing chain . Up until this point in time, Mercedes-Benz was using improperly hardened material. As a result, the entire chain drive on affected vehicles had to be replaced on a regular basis. According to Mercedes-Benz, a modified spur gear was installed from engine number 088611.

The variable intake manifold also caused problems. The plastic flaps used in it, which are intended to vary the length of the suction path, can coke over time and, in extreme cases, break off.

successor

The successor from 2010 was the M 278 engine .

performance increase

In addition to a pure electronics optimization , the result of which most suppliers state with 316 kW (430 PS) and which led to a significant improvement in acceleration to 200 km / h in various test reports (up to approx. 3 s shorter acceleration times), more complex conversions are also included other camshafts and valve springs available (approx. 460 hp).

There are also manifolds available, but they may not be operated within the scope of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations . Their installation leads to the expiry of the operating license for the vehicle in question. In addition, a deterioration in the exhaust gas behavior of the engine caused by the installation can lead to the fulfillment of a tax offense.
