The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is an off-road sedan, the American name for such cars is full-size SUV . The model was presented to the public in January 2006 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit and delivered from October 2006. The GL-Class (internal designation X 164 ) is technically closely related to the M-Class (W 164) . Like the R-Class (251 series), the vehicle was produced by Mercedes-Benz US International in Vance near Tuscaloosa (Alabama / USA). Upon request, the GL was equipped with a third row of seats and seating for seven people. The second generation of the GL-Class came onto the market in November 2012 .

Facelift

At the New York International Auto Show 2009, technically and visually revised models were presented and sold since June 2009. The 320 CDI became a BlueEFFICIENCY model and, like all other 320s, was renamed the 350s. The 420 CDI became the 450 CDI. Since the facelift, the GL 350 BlueTEC, which meets the EU6 emissions standard , has also been used in Germany . The BlueTEC model had already been successfully tested in the USA. In addition, the GL can now be equipped with assistance systems from the S- and E-Class, including the Intelligent Light System and active headrests. A new bumper, a redesigned chrome underguard in the front and rear, a new radiator grille and the fog and daytime running lights connected to one another by means of chrome clips were attached to the appearance. Since then there have also been rims between 18 and 21 inches and revised chrome exhaust pipes. During the facelift, the towbar was placed invisibly behind the rear apron and can be folded out if necessary. The rear lights have also been given a new design. Inside, Mercedes has changed the instrument cluster and the multifunction steering wheel is standard. In addition, all GL models have since been fitted with leather (Artico) seats with contrasting stitching as standard. The top model, the GL 500, has nappa leather seat covers as standard.

Grand Edition special model

From summer 2011 Mercedes-Benz offered the special model Grand Edition at the end of the production cycle of the X 164 . This is characterized at the front by darkened headlights, a modified bumper with a continuous air inlet, LED daytime running lights and an enlarged radiator grille, as on the GL 550, with three black painted slats and an enlarged Mercedes-Benz logo. Aluminum running boards are characteristic of this special model. The rear has split exhaust panels. In addition, this model also differs from the other models in terms of the interior: there is also an optional interior in two-tone leather and a sports pedal system. The Grand Edition has a reduction gear and height-adjustable air suspension as standard .

Engines

Except for the smaller V8 petrol engine, the engines for the GL-Class are known from the Mercedes-Benz model range. Only high-displacement engines are offered for the main sales market North America. All of the cars have the 4MATIC suffix , although all-wheel drive is standard equipment in this class.
