The Mercedes-Benz O 405 N is a city bus from Daimler-Benz in low-floor design that was built from 1989 to 2001. It has two or three doors and two axles , the rear of which is the drive axle .

description

O 405 N2 in Weinheim

It represents a further development of the high-floor Mercedes-Benz O 405 and turned out to be a great success. While in the first few years the seats in the front part of the vehicle were arranged on pedestals, a further developed version without pedestals appeared in 1994. This version, also known as O 405 N2 , can be recognized from the outside by the pulled down panes. Although the O 530 Citaro, designated as the successor, was manufactured from 1997, production of the vehicles in the O-405 series did not end until autumn 2001.

variants

In addition to the normal version as a city bus O 405 N, which was available with 2 or 3 doors, Mercedes-Benz produced the following other variants, although only the articulated bus was offered until the platform-free variant was developed:

  • O 405 NK : shortened version with about 10.5 m length, 2 or 3 doors
  • O 405 NKF : shortened version with about 10.5 m length, lower with about 2.6 m height, 2 doors (custom-made for Karlsruhe)
  • O 405 NÜ : Overland version, 2 doors
  • O 405 ÜNG : Overland version with hybrid drive, 2 doors
  • O 405 NH : City version with hybrid drive, 3 doors
  • O 405 NL : extended version 13 m long, 2 doors
  • O 405 NÜL : extended overland version with a length of 13 m, 2 doors
  • O 405 GN : Articulated bus 18 m long, 3 or 4 doors
  • O 405 GNÜ : Overland version of the articulated bus similar to the O 405 NÜ, 3 doors
  • O 405 GNDE : diesel-electric articulated bus with wheel hub motors, 3 or 4 doors
  • O 405 GNTD : Duo articulated bus (combustion engine and electric drive) with wheel hub motors, 3 or 4 doors

The basic type O 405 N2 and the joint variant O 405 GN2 were also exported to Great Britain and Northern Ireland as right-hand drive vehicles . The further developed O 405 NH chassis was produced for the Australian market and was body-built on site.

Natural gas drive

The variants equipped with conventional combustion engines were also available as natural gas buses , which was indicated by the addition of G (e.g. O 405 NG ). In 1995 and 1996, the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) acquired a pilot series of this type of twelve buses, which later found its way into other cities. At that time, the low-floor technology was so advanced that the BVB replaced their old standard buses of the FBW B51U series with the aforementioned series. Noise-encapsulated, water-cooled M 447 hG engines were used, which drive the outer planetary axle in the rear, under the car floor . Initially, five gas containers were resp. Steel bottles with a capacity of 165 liters each installed. Two more containers were added later. Additional equipment also included air suspension with kneeling , recirculating ball power steering and an anti-lock braking system . BVB sold the O 405 N2 CNG gas buses 801-812 to the vehicle dealer Mario Röttgen in Untersteinach . This company sold the 806 to Poland and the rest of the series to Plovdiv in Bulgaria .

Trolleybuses in Gdynia

Because EvoBus itself no longer offered trolleybuses , the transport company in the Polish city of Gdynia converted 28 O 405 N solo cars into trolleybuses on their own between 2004 and 2010. It is hoped that this will result in savings in spare parts stockpiling - this can be done together with the similar diesel buses of the dispenser series - as well as lower acquisition costs compared to mass-produced trolleybuses. The converted cars have the road numbers 3013-20, 41, 45-48, 50-52, 55-66 and are designated as type O 405 NE . The Mercedes star was removed for trademark reasons.
