The success in the regular service came after the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe 1995 with the commissioning of twelve gas buses of the Mercedes-Benz O 405 N2 CNG had started a pilot project. Today, many rural and urban bus operators opt for natural gas buses, which are now produced by various vehicle manufacturers. The outside of the car can be recognized by the quieter engine noise and the natural gas tank on the roof. Because of this rounded box, the city of Basel's first gas bus was christened “Quasimodo”.
