The Mercedes-Benz W 133 III , known as the 170 VG , was an off-road jeep that was developed by Daimler-Benz in 1935 from the 170 V for military purposes .

Its wheelbase is 2600 mm and its front section with its vertical radiator grille is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz trucks . It had the side-controlled 1.7-liter four-cylinder in-line engine of the 170 V type with a compression ratio of 6.5: 1 and an output of 38 hp (28 kW) at 3400 rpm. The engine develops a maximum torque of 100  Nm (10.2 mkp) at a speed of 1800 rpm. An unsynchronized four- or five-speed gearbox transfers the power to the rear wheels or optionally to all four wheels. There are two gearshifts in the middle of the car for the gearbox and the activation of the front-wheel drive. The rear wheels hang on a coil-sprung swing axle . The front axle has two transverse leaf springs. All four wheels have hydraulic brakes.

The cars with five-speed gearbox reach 90 km / h in operation with two driven wheels and 55 km / h in all-wheel operation. The version with four-speed gearbox creates 110 km / h or 60 km / h.

The Heereswaffenamt (HWA) ordered 62 vehicles for testing by the Wehrmacht , but showed no interest in further procurement. At the same time, on behalf of the HWA, the Stoewer-Werke in Stettin began developing the light standard car .
