The " N ew G eneration" is a truck range of Daimler-Benz , which was built from 1973 to 1988. With the new generation, Daimler-Benz was able to expand its position in medium and heavy trucks. The vehicles sold excellently and spread almost all over the world. It was through the SK series ( S chwere K let) replaced.

NG 73

The "New Generation", which was introduced from 1973, was a new design with a completely new appearance. Initially, the new generation was brought onto the market as a construction site vehicle, and in 1974 a long-distance cab that was extended by 600 millimeters was added. In 1977 the cab was available in three different versions: a short cab, also known as the S cab, a medium-length cab (M cab) with narrow rear side windows and the long-distance cab of the time, the L cab with two berths. Until 1977, the cabs had narrow fenders and when the medium-length cab was added, the fenders on all three types became wider. The vehicles in the medium weight classes were also included in this NG series from 1975 and no longer received their own cabs. All cabs were now tiltable. In 1979 the so-called large cab was added.

NG 80

From 1980 the vehicles of the new generation were offered with new engines from 96 kW / 130 HP to 276 kW / 375 HP. Particularly powerful engines with turbocharging and intercooling were now available for road vehicles, which construction vehicles were unable to use for the time being. The good old V10, however, meanwhile brought to 18.3 liters displacement, at least helps the 1936 A, which was built from 1980, to around 265 kW / 360 PS. The redesigned vehicles could be recognized from the outside by the wind deflectors that were installed at the corners of the cabs. Furthermore, the horizontal decorative strip on the radiator grille was omitted. The type lettering and mirror housing were henceforth black. As the fourth cab variant above the L-cab, the GR cab was offered as a real long-distance cab with a raised roof and clothes rack. This cab was also wider than the others (recognizable by the wheel arches that were flush with the cab) and had no windows as standard on the driver's side at the rear left and on the rear of the cab. From 1984 onwards, the V10 (OM 423 LA) with turbocharging and charge air cooling, which has now found its niche mainly in construction and as a heavy-weight vacuum cleaner, has been given a very special honor. From then on, it functions as a particularly powerful 500 PS heart for the now legendary, all-wheel-drive three-axle heavy-duty tractor 3850 AS, which can shine with a full maximum torque of over 2000 Newton meters.

NG 85

A third and final revision took place in 1985. Which was first introduced in electro-pneumatic circuit ( Electronic Power Shift , EPS) a computerized switching help, it was offered as standard for the then new "top model" 1644th In the performance classes below, it was initially optional and not available in construction site vehicles. The engine range was revised again, the most powerful engine was the OM 442 LA with 320 kW / 435 hp, a V8 with turbocharging and intercooling and a displacement of 14.6 liters. The same engine block was offered as the OM 442 A without charge air cooling with 257 kW / 350 PS. Otherwise, the engine range remained largely unchanged. These new vehicles were externally recognizable by their smaller, rectangular type plates with silver lettering. More modern toggle switches were used on the dashboard instead of the previous push buttons. As a spectacular highlight, heavy chunks with the 8x8 axle formula appeared in 1987 among the all-wheel drive construction vehicles: all-wheel drive four-axle vehicles. As 3528 AK or 3535 AK for a total technical weight of 35 tonnes, they are available with the 14.6-liter V8 in suction and turbo versions and form the crowning glory of the four-axle vehicle, which is still young in Germany.

Military vehicles

General

Mercedes-Benz 1017A of the German Armed Forces

The "new generation" was also delivered to numerous armies. As the Mercedes-Benz 1017 or 1017A , it was also procured by the German armed forces from 1977 . As part of the re-equipment of the Bundeswehr, up to 22,000 Mercedes-Benz 1017 and 1017A vehicles were originally intended to be put into service. However, since at the same time an order for the delivery of approx. 18,000 Mercedes-Benz U 1300 L ( Unimog ) had already been awarded to Daimler-Benz AG, protests by employees of Magirus-Deutz AG occurred , so that around 7,000 units in this tonnage class were delivered by this manufacturer (or its successor company Iveco Magirus ) (see: Magirus-Deutz MK series ). The designation 1017 of the Mercedes-Benz model is made up of the gross vehicle weight and the engine power. Vehicles with a switchable front axle drive are identified by the A as an all-wheel drive version and have the Bundeswehr designation “tmil gl” for partially militarized off-road vehicles . The last vehicles were delivered until 1988 and are still in use today in large numbers under the tactical name of LKW 5t tmil. In many cases it is also known as the “5-ton truck” in terms of the maximum payload. In the colloquial language of the Bundeswehr, the term “tonner” also generally stands for a truck.

technology

The vehicles are essentially based on series production by Mercedes-Benz. The partial militarization is particularly characterized by the hinged roof hatch. Furthermore, the controls for windshield wipers, windshield washer systems and lighting differ from the series. While the first vehicles were delivered in yellow olive, the others followed in bronze green or received the three-color camouflage.

The vehicles have a short, all-steel, cab with cab with three individual seats. The middle seat can be folded down and used as a base for the roof hatch. In order to make better use of the limited space in the cabin, the vehicles have additional storage space in the rear area in which the soldiers' personal equipment can be stored instead of the rear windows. The cabin is hydraulically tiltable for maintenance and repair work and can be folded forward using a hand pump. Relevant test centers for the technical service before and after use can be reached through the front maintenance flaps .

The Mercedes-Benz 1017 is powered by the OM 352  A. This is a water-cooled 6-cylinder diesel in-line engine with exhaust gas turbocharger and integrated compressor, which generates an output of 127 kW / 172 hp at 2,800 rpm from 5,675 cm³ . The maximum torque is 540 Nm at 1,600 rpm. In normal operation the consumption is approx. 20 l per 100 km. With a tank volume of 135 l, the range of the Mercedes-Benz 1017 is around 600–700 km. The power is transmitted to the rear axle by means of a hydraulically operated single-plate dry clutch and a manually shifted, synchronized 5-speed gearbox, which has a differential lock. With the all-wheel drive version , the front drive can be activated. The maximum speed is 93 km / h or 87 km / h for the all-wheel drive version.

The vehicles have drum brakes on all four wheels. This is an air-assisted hydraulic brake, which allows soft braking even when cold. Depending on the load, the braking force is controlled by the automatic, load-dependent braking force regulator (ALB). In addition, the Mercedes-Benz 1017 has a spring-loaded brake as a parking brake that acts on the rear wheels. A permanent brake is available in the form of a pneumatically operated throttle valve in the exhaust manifold. At the same time, the fuel delivery is mechanically cut off, since this device also serves to switch off the engine.

The chassis consists of a U-profile frame with cross members. The suspension of the axles is carried out by means of semi-elliptic leaf springs and telescopic shock absorbers. The maximum fording depth is only 500 mm. For trailer operation, the vehicles have the usual NATO coupling , which enables off-road driving with trailers. There are also two compressed air connections and a socket.

The on- board network is operated with 24 V, which is common for commercial vehicles of this class. The vehicles are accordingly equipped with two 12 V batteries that are connected in series. Part of the all-wheel drive version of the vehicles is also equipped with camouflage light. This includes camouflaged headlights at the front, camouflaged rear and brake lights as well as the guide cross . All vehicles have a main battery switch (emergency stop) that disconnects the electrical system from the battery in an emergency. This facility is z. B. mandatory for the transport of dangerous goods.

In the mid-1990s, most of the vehicles were equipped with side underrun protection in order to meet the new requirements of the StVZO . This underrun protection can be folded up for maintenance work or to reach the storage boxes.

Areas of application

The following basic versions of the Mercedes-Benz 1017 were procured for the German Armed Forces and thus mostly replaced the MAN 630 :

  • Motor vehicle, truck , flatbed (4 × 2) 2320-12-168-1811 rear axle driven
  • Motor vehicle, truck, flatbed (4 × 4) 2320-12-168-2298 all-wheel drive, front-axle drive can be activated
  • Motor vehicle, tipper (4 × 4) 2320-12-190-6524 all-wheel drive, front axle drive can be activated
  • Motor vehicle, fire extinguisher 2400 L (4 × 4) 4210-12-193-2551 all-wheel drive, front axle drive can be activated
  • Motor vehicle, truck, flatbed (4 × 4) 2320-12-308-8889 with camouflage lighting, all-wheel drive, front-axle drive can be activated

The Mercedes-Benz 1017 or 1017A is used by the army , air force and navy . Some vehicles are adapted to the needs of the respective troop units and are equipped with appropriate kits. Among other things, the Mercedes-Benz 1017 is used for driver training, for which it is equipped with a second pedal system and additional mirrors. Often the cabin II is mounted on the flatbed, which is often used by the telecommunications and medical troops. The mountain hunters use vehicles with a raised tarpaulin to transport mules , which are still used today. In some cases, there are vehicles in which the suitcase of a MAN 630 was mounted on the flatbed. Other vehicles were equipped with a mounting plate at the front and hydraulic connections and can therefore be used with a snow plow in winter. For special weapon systems such as B. Drones, special structures are used.

The vehicle has proven itself very well in troop service and is very popular with soldiers due to its reliability and ease of use. In particular, its good-natured driving behavior and the clarity of the entire vehicle are positive characteristics of the Mercedes-Benz 1017.

Motor vehicle, truck, flatbed

The most common version are vehicles with a flatbed. This is a 5 m long and 2.38 m wide, torsion-free steel platform. The floor is lined with wood and has lashing eyes and mountings to secure cargo or to mount benches. A total of two bench seats for eight people each can be installed in the middle. The four removable side panels and the tailgate are also made of steel, although the first vehicles were delivered with wooden side walls that were framed in profile steel. Usually the vehicles have a round tarpaulin made of canvas or PVC. Some vehicles are equipped with a square tarpaulin (Hamburg hood) and are mainly used as traction means for field kitchens . The maximum payload is 5450 kilograms or 5400 kilograms for the all-wheel drive version. Fire extinguishers , tool kits, jacks, vehicle equipment, lashing material and the tow bar can be found in various storage boxes and compartments below the platform . The platform is suitable for a cabin II.

Cars, dump trucks

The Mercedes-Benz 1017A was equipped with a Meiller three-way tipper for the pioneer units and especially for runway repair. The steel platform is 3.8 m long and 2.33 m wide and can be tilted on three sides. The tailgate is variable and can also be used as a pendulum flap. For the transport of light bulk goods, the side walls can be raised by attaching additional parts. The maximum payload is 5,240 kg.

Motor vehicle, fire extinguisher 2400 L

For firefighting in depots as well as on airfields and training areas, some Mercedes-Benz 1017A were equipped with fire service superstructures. In contrast to the vehicles, the corresponding superstructures were not newly acquired. This was based on stocks that were acquired between 1958 and 1964 and mounted on the chassis of the Mercedes-Benz LG 315/46 and that were only converted after revision. In addition to an additional crew cabin in the superstructure, the vehicles have a workstation spotlight on the right-hand side and the corresponding special signaling system.
