The Magirus-Deutz Jupiter 6 × 6 is a truck with predominantly military use by the former German commercial vehicle manufacturer Magirus-Deutz . From 1960 he was delivered to the German Armed Forces , to the Federal Border Guard and to foreign armies. The vehicle was also built as a civilian truck under the name Jupiter 6 × 6 Z.

Jupiter 6 × 6

After Magirus-Deutz was awarded the contract to deliver vehicles in the 7-tonne class to the German Armed Forces, the delivery of the Jupiter 6 × 6 began in 1960. The most important change compared to the A 6500 and A 7500 models, in addition to the axle and drive configuration, was the installation of a multi-fuel engine : the air-cooled V8 unit of the type F8L714A from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz has a displacement of 12,667 cm³ and is throttled between 110 and 131 kW, depending on the fuel used and the injection pump setting. The civil version of the engine, on the other hand, has an output of 143 kW. Permitted fuels are diesel , kerosene , kerosene and gasoline as well as (if the above fuels are not available in sufficient quantities) also piston lubricating oil , which must be brought to a viscosity of below 17 cSt at ambient temperature by adding the fuels already mentioned  . In an emergency, the engine also burns vegetable oils such as B. Frying oil .

The Jupiter 6 × 6 chassis were used by the Bundeswehr with salvage cranes (from Wilhag and Kirsten), crew transport platforms , tipper platforms , airfield fire engines (from Bachert ), tankers and rocket launchers ( light artillery rocket system , LARS 1). In addition, tractor units were also available. The crane trucks with a front-mounted cable winch were of great importance to the pioneer units of the Bundeswehr and were able to cope with inclines of up to 57.7%.

Further development

After a change in the model nomenclature at Magirus-Deutz, the model Jupiter 6 × 6 was called "M178D15A" from 1964. 178 indicated the power in hp, 15 the gross vehicle weight of 15 tons and A all-wheel drive. By the time the series was discontinued in 1967, the Bundeswehr received around 7800 copies of the Jupiter 6 × 6 or M178D15A, and occasional vehicles were delivered in the 1970s. The decommissioning of the first vehicles in Germany began in the 1980s. The airfield fire engines often ended up in the hands of volunteer fire brigades and some of them are still in use. Numerous crane trucks and flatbed trucks came to the THW and to private towing and recovery companies after they were retired from the Bundeswehr . At most, single-digit numbers have remained in Bundeswehr stocks to this day. Accordingly, preserved specimens are now sought-after collector's items. Foreign armies also got the Jupiter 6 × 6 or the M178D15A, e.g. B. the Albanian Armed Forces.

Magirus-Deutz (or the successor company Iveco Magirus ) also received orders from the Bundeswehr in the following years and a. Tankers and tractor based on heavy cab- type M320D22F and M320D26F (about 900 pieces) as well as off-road Club of Four models in the 5t class type M168M11FAL or M168M11FL or later after a new change in the model nomenclature 110-17 (around 6800 Pieces from 1980). The latter, together with the Mercedes-Benz 1017, represent the 2nd generation of wheeled vehicles of the Bundeswehr in the 5t class ( see also the main article Magirus-Deutz MK series ).
