Faun L 912/45 A tractor (without tarpaulin)

The Faun L 912/45 A was a military truck from the German commercial vehicle manufacturer Faun and belonged to the 1st generation of wheeled vehicles of the Bundeswehr .

214 vehicles of this type were delivered to the German Armed Forces between 1958 and 1970 and were mainly used as tractors for low-bed trailers up to 25 t, towing vehicles and recovery vehicles.

description

The vehicle is a three-axle, all-wheel drive long - hooded truck (6 × 6) with a flatbed . Under the very long bonnet, which makes up almost a third of the total vehicle length, an air-cooled Deutz V12 diesel engine of the type F 12 L 614 with 184 kW (250 PS) was used. From 1961 the air-cooled V12 multi-fuel diesel engine Deutz F 12 L 714 A with 195 kW (265 hp) was installed. Externally, the two variants could be distinguished by different radiator panels. In order to improve the cooling of the engine, the side parts of the bonnet were often removed (see picture).

The wheels of the two rear axles have twin tires. As is typical for many military trucks of the 1st generation of the Bundeswehr, the driver's cab is not closed, but has a foldable fabric top and a front window that can be folded down, so that the vehicle could also be used in combat if required.

The relatively short flatbed with wooden floor could be used to transport loads of up to 15 t (e.g. for ballast weights for heavy trailers) or personnel. A cable winch from Rotzler with 8000 kp (78.5 kN) pulling force and 60 m cable length was mounted on the vehicle frame under the front part of the platform, which could be used both backwards and forwards via guide rollers.

While the majority of the vehicles were taken out of service at the end of the 1970s, the last examples were in service with the Bundeswehr until the beginning of the 1990s.

Faun L 912 / SA tractor unit

The technical data of the Faun L 912 / SA tractor unit are almost identical to those of the Faun L 912/45, but the vehicle is minimally shorter due to the lack of a platform and the curb weight and permissible total weight are 500 kg higher.

Instead of the flatbed, a saddle plate that can move around the longitudinal and transverse axis is attached to the rear axles to accommodate semi-low loaders. From 1957 to 1970 a total of 108 vehicles were delivered to the Bundeswehr. The early copies of this type had a fixed driver's cab, later it was identical to that of the Faun L 912/45 A (foldable fabric top and foldable windscreen). Instead of the Rotzler cable winch of the Faun L 912/45 A, Faun's own cable winch with 10 Mp (98 kN) pulling force and 80 m cable length is mounted on the vehicle frame between the saddle plate and the driver's cab.

Faun L 912/5050 A (sliding tipper)

Drawing of a Faun sliding tipper with a Deutz / Frisch DK 60 bulldozer

Between 1959 and 1971, 261 vehicles of the Faun L 912/5050 A slide tipper were delivered to the German Armed Forces, where they were mainly used by engineer battalions as bulk goods transporters and as transport vehicles for bulldozers. Instead of the fixed platform of the Faun L 912/45 A, the Faun L 912/5050 A has a longer platform that can be tilted backwards, pushed out backwards and then lowered onto the ground so that the Deutz DK bulldozer can be 60 loaded and unloaded. In contrast to the Faun L 912/45 A, the Faun L 912/5050 A has larger wheels (the same as the Wilhag / Faun truck crane 13 tons) and the rear wheels have single tires.

The technical data of the skidipper differ in the following points from those of the Faun L 912/45 A:

Empty weight: 14,600 kg
Perm. Total weight: 25,200 kg
Wheelbase: 4300 + 1500 mm
Overall dimensions: 9100 × 2500 × 2900 mm (height above cab)
Loading area: 5000 × 2300 mm
Tires: 14.00-24
Top speed: 64 km / h

Faun L 908/425 A / LK 908 A (tractor)

The Faun L 908/425 A tractors are very similar to the Faun L 912/45 A both visually and in terms of their intended use as a towing, recovery and material transport vehicle and as a traction device for special purposes, but this is an independent series 77 copies of which were delivered to the Bundeswehr from 1957 to 1963.

The main distinguishing features of the Faun L 912/45 A are the single tires on the rear axle wheels and the shorter bonnet (instead of the Deutz V12 diesel / multi-fuel engines, the shorter Deutz V8 diesel / multi-fuel engines are installed, with which the Magirus-Deutz Jupiter 6x6 was also equipped) .

Early examples of the vehicle had a fixed driver's cab, later a foldable fabric top and a foldable windscreen.

The Faun LK 908 A differs from the L 908/425 A in that it has a towing crane with 10 t lifting capacity that is mounted on the platform and protrudes 60 cm over the rear edge of the platform. 20 vehicles of this type were purchased, all of which were equipped with a fixed driver's cab and diesel engine.
