The Mercedes-Benz W 14 is the further development of the prototype of the lower mid-range Mercedes-Benz W 01 from 1926, which the management did not give any market opportunities because of its expensive six-cylinder engine. Again, the vehicle was to be offered as a 5/25 PS type .

Ferdinand Porsche revised the concept of the W 01 and constructed a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1280 cm³ and also 25 HP (18.4 kW). Due to the low elasticity of the four-cylinder, he had a four-speed transmission provided. The car reached a top speed of 84 km / h. 28 prototypes, touring cars and sedans, were built of this model.

The management liked this vehicle much better, but they defined the breakeven point for its production at 1000 units per month. This would have required an immediate investment of RM 10 million, which they did not want to make at the time. So the compact car project was finally shelved.
