The Mercedes-Benz LP 333 is a three-axle 16-ton truck from Daimler-Benz AG. The also called "centipede" forward control with double front came as a last resort due to the Seebohm'schen laws : For three-axle truck a total weight of 16 tonnes was allowed. In 1960 the permissible total weight for two-axle trucks was increased again from 12 to 16 t. Therefore, the LP 333 was only built from 1958 to 1961. The truck is called the LPS 333 . A total of 1833 vehicles were built, 354 of them in the last year of production.

technology
Chassis and power transmission
The LP 333 is a front-link truck with a ladder frame , two front axles and one rear axle. All axles are rigid axles and are sprung with two longitudinal leaf springs each; the rear axle also has progressive auxiliary springs, the first front axle hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers . The wheels are sheet steel disc wheels with tapered shoulder rims of size 7.5-20. Both front axles have single tires, the rear axle has twin tires . All tires are 10-20 eHD size. The Westinghouse brake system from Mercedes-Benz works with compressed air and acts on brake drums with a diameter of 440 mm on all wheels. Both front axles are steered with a Gemmer steering . The tie rods are not split; the LP 333 is only available as a left-hand drive.
The power is transmitted from the diesel engine via a single- disk dry clutch of the type Fichtel & Sachs G 70 KR to a horizontally installed, synchronized six-speed manual transmission of the type ZF S 6-70 . The transmission has a pneumatic shifting aid. The sixth gear is designed as an overdrive. The power is transmitted from the gearbox via a cardan shaft to a spiral bevel gearbox on the rear axle. The LP 333 was not available with all-wheel drive.
engine
The engine of the type Mercedes-Benz OM 326 .I is a six-cylinder - Series - antechamber - diesel engine with water cooling and four overhead valves . It is suspended on the frame in four rubber bearings. The split crankcase made of gray cast iron is cast together with the cylinder block. With a cylinder bore of 128 mm and a piston stroke of 140 mm, the engine has a total displacement of 10,809 cm³. The pistons are forged light alloy pistons from Mahle with four compression rings and two oil control rings ; a compression ring is chrome-plated . The force is transmitted to the forged crankshaft via connecting rods with a double-T cross-section , which is supported and hardened seven times in plain bearings. It has counterweights and vibration dampers.
The crankshaft drives the camshaft located in the crankcase via helical spur gears . It operates two inlet and two outlet valves per cylinder via tappets , push rods and rocker arms , which are suspended vertically in the cylinder head. The engine has six individual cylinder heads, which are sealed to the engine block with an asbestos-containing cylinder head gasket.
The fuel is cleaned by a two-stage fuel filter, the first stage of which is a felt tube filter and the second a micronic filter. It is then injected into the prechambers by a Bosch PES 6 A 90 B 410 RS 283/7 injection pump through a Bosch DNO SD 211 injection nozzle . The injection pump is controlled by a centrifugal governor. The sucked in air is cleaned by two paper filters and fed to the combustion chambers for all six cylinder heads via a common suction pipe made of light metal. The motor has pressure circulation lubrication with a temperature controller; a filter in the main flow and a fine filter clean the oil. A water cooling system with a finned tube cooler, which is regulated by a control thermostat, is used for cooling . A fan blows the waste heat away.
