The Mercedes F1 W03 is the fourth Formula 1 - racing car of Mercedes . It was used in the 2012 Formula 1 season ; the engine supplier was Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains . It was presented to the public on February 21, 2012 at the Circuit de Catalunya .

Technology and development

The Mercedes F1 W03 was the successor to the Mercedes MGP W02 . Development began in May 2011 by a specially reinforced technical team. The vehicle consisted of 4,500 components - 200 more than the W02 - and, according to the factory, nevertheless had a lower “core weight”. Compared to the previous model, the car had "humps" in the area of the front suspension, the wheelbase was enlarged, the slim side pods were pulled inwards and the upper wheel carrier of the rear suspension protruded far forward. Due to the regulations, the tailpipes have also been modified. They ended almost flush with the engine cover. The Mercedes F1 W03 was built under the direction of technical director Bob Bell . Loïc Bigois was the chief designer. Aldo Costa was responsible for the mechanical components and Geoff Willis for the aerodynamics and driving dynamics.

The gearbox was an in-house design, the engine was a 2.4-liter V8 engine , and the KERS came from Mercedes AMG HPP . As with all other teams, the tires were provided by Pirelli .

The car had a so-called passive F-shaft for the front of the vehicle, or double DRS (DDRS), in which a channel on the rear wing was opened by pressing the DRS button on the steering wheel, which conducted air to the front and under the front wing . This created a stall that reduced the vehicle's air resistance and thus enabled a higher speed. In addition, the balance of the car was improved, which was advantageous in fast corners, as it was also possible to drive with activated DRS here during training. Before the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix , the system was declared legal by the race stewards during the technical inspection. The teams from Red Bull and Lotus announced a protest against this evaluation, as they considered the system to be non-compliant. Both Lotus and Red Bull decided not to protest against the race result after the race, in which no Mercedes scored points. Instead, before the Chinese Grand Prix , Lotus filed a formal protest against the decision of the race stewards to classify the system as legal for this race as well. After a hearing at which the race stewards and Jo Bauer , the FIA's technical delegate at the races, justified the decision, Lotus decided not to involve the FIA's International Court of Appeal, the final instance in questions of rule interpretation.

Painting and sponsorship

The Mercedes F1 W03 was mainly painted silver. The side pods and parts of the front and rear wing were painted cyan because of the main sponsor Petronas . In addition to the shareholders Daimler AG (with the Mercedes-Benz brand ) and Aabar Investments , Allianz , Deutsche Post , Isofotón , MIG Bank , Monster Energy , Pirelli , Puma , Standox and Thomas Sabo were sponsors of the team.

driver

The racing team stuck to the driver pairing Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg .

2012 season

At the Chinese Grand Prix , Rosberg was the first Mercedes driver to win a Formula 1 race since 1955.
