World champion Sebastian Vettel

The 2012 Formula 1 World Championship was the 63rd season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It comprised 20 races for the first time and was held from March 18 to November 25. Sebastian Vettel defended his world title this season and became the youngest three-time world champion. His racing team Red Bull-Renault, with Mark Webber as the second driver, also managed to defend the constructors' title early.

With Fernando Alonso , Jenson Button , Lewis Hamilton , Kimi Räikkönen , Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, six drivers took part in the 2012 World Championship, each of which has won the World Championship at least once, has already won 14 titles and has also won all World Championships since the 2000 season had.

Changes in 2012

Racetracks

According to the first version of the racing calendar, which was published on June 3, 2011, 21 races were planned for 2012 for the first time. At a meeting of FOTA on July 28, 2011 changes were decided and a racing calendar with 20 races was presented. The Turkish Grand Prix has been removed from this draft and some dates have changed. The racing calendar was confirmed by the FIA on August 31, 2011 .

Formula 1 returned to the United States . The US Grand Prix took place for the first time on the new Circuit of The Americas in Austin , Texas . The last US Grand Prix until then was held in 2007 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . The only Formula 1 race in Texas so far took place in 1984 at the Dallas Fair Park Grand Prix Circuit .

In 2012, the German Grand Prix took place again at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg on a rotating basis.

Regulations

The visually most noticeable change in the season was the lowering of the nose from a maximum of 62.5 cm to 55 cm. Since this only affected the area above the front wing, most cars had a prominent hump in front of the front suspension. Only the McLaren MP4-27 and the Marussia MR01 managed without this hump. The reason for the change were safety concerns, because the noses, which were arranged as high as possible for aerodynamic reasons, meant a greater risk for the driver in the event of a collision.

In the 2011 season , some teams, including World Champion Red Bull , relied on an exhaust system that directs the engine's exhaust gases to the rear diffuser and thus ensures higher contact pressure. The engine management ensured that even if the driver took off the accelerator, the contact pressure was not lost due to additional fuel injected. A ban on this “blown diffuser” was discussed as early as the 2011 season, but was postponed to the beginning of the 2012 season after protests by the teams.

Drivers were not allowed to leave the track without an important reason even during in and out laps. In the previous season, some drivers cut short tests, especially on the lap after exiting the pits, in order to save tires and fuel. In addition, drivers who left the racing line in order to defend their position were not allowed to return to the racing line.

During a safety car phase, all lapped vehicles were allowed to lap back so that they did not interfere with the faster vehicles when they restarted.

Previously, new vehicles only had to pass the FIA crash tests before the first race of the season. As of this season, this also applied to test drives. In addition, the requirements for side impacts have been tightened.

In recent years, tests have been banned during the season in order to save costs. This year there was again a three-day test in Mugello from May 1st to 3rd, but one less test before the start of the season.

In order to save costs, the maximum operating time of a wind tunnel was limited to 60 hours per week. An upper limit of 40 TeraFLOPS has been set for CFD calculations  .

Teams

Three teams changed the designer name:

The previous team Lotus , which entered Formula 1 in 2010 as Lotus Racing , renounced the use of the Lotus name and integrated the British sports car manufacturer Caterham into the name. Both the racing team and the sports car manufacturer are owned by Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes . The official team name was Caterham F1 Team .

The resulting constructor name Lotus was taken over by the previous Renault team. So far, Lotus has only been the title sponsor of the racing team registered as Lotus Renault GP , which is owned by the Luxembourg company Genii Capital . The Renault team was created in 2001 through the takeover of Benetton . The team also changed the official team name to Lotus F1 Team .

Two years after its inception, Virgin also changed the designer's name to Marussia . Russian automaker Marussia Motors already owns shares in the team that was originally reported as the Manor Grand Prix . The team chose Marussia F1 Racing as the official name .

The Formula 1 Commission had approved the name change. This means that regardless of the name change, the racing teams were allowed to keep the awards from the 2011 season. The FIA confirmed the name changes.

There were also three changes to the official team names. Mercedes integrated the motorsport subsidiary AMG in its name and competed as the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team . At Force India , the new shareholder Sahara India Pariwar was mentioned in the name, so that the racing team started as the Sahara Force India F1 Team . At Williams , AT&T ended its engagement as title sponsor. The team entered as the Williams F1 Team in 2012 .

driver

Pedro de la Rosa , who was active as a test driver at McLaren in 2011 and had completed a race for Sauber as a substitute , received a two-year contract with HRT in 2012 and returned to a regular cockpit.

Charles Pic , who finished fourth overall in the GP2 series in 2011 , made his Formula 1 debut for Marussia .

Robert Kubica , who was represented at Renault in 2011 by Nick Heidfeld and Bruno Senna due to an injury , had a contract with the racing team , which started as the Lotus F1 Team in 2012, for the 2012 season, but at the end of November 2011 he announced that he was not in time for the season opener will get fit. A little later, Lotus announced that Kimi Räikkönen would take over the cockpit for the 2012 season. In addition to Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean drove the second Lotus. Grosjean was preferred to Vitaly Petrov , although he had a valid contract for the 2012 season. Grosjean made his Formula 1 debut in 2009 and was without a cockpit for the next two years. During this time he became champion of the Auto GP ( 2010 ), the GP2 Asia series ( 2011 ) and the GP2 series (2011).

Bruno Senna , who had played the second half of the season for Renault after Nick Heidfeld's dismissal in 2011 , was signed by Williams for the 2012 season . He replaced Rubens Barrichello , who had tried to the last to get a contract with Williams for his 20th Formula 1 season.

Vitaly Petrow , who originally had a contract with Lotus for the 2012 season but was replaced by Romain Grosjean , announced his move to Caterham in mid-February 2012 . He replaced Jarno Trulli , who originally had a contract for 2012 with Caterham.

The Scuderia Toro Rosso went to 2012 with a completely new driver duo. Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne replaced Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari . Ricciardo and Vergne have been supported by Red Bull , the owner of the team, for a number of years . Both were last active in Formula Renault 3.5 , in which Vergne was runner-up in 2011 and Ricciardo was fifth. Ricciardo also completed eleven Formula 1 races for HRT in 2011 , while Vergne has only participated in Formula 1 test drives so far. Both pilots have had a similar career in recent years. Ricciardo was runner-up in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2008 , champion of British Formula 3 in 2009 and runner-up in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2010. Vergne achieved the same successes one year after Ricciardo.

At Force India , Nico Hulkenberg returned to Formula 1 as a driver and contested his second season. Hülkenberg was a test driver for the team in 2011 and was used in some free practice sessions. Hulkenberg replaced his compatriot Adrian Sutil .

Sébastien Buemi , who had lost his cockpit at Toro Rosso, became a reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and its sister team Toro Rosso. Even Jerome D'Ambrosio , the 2011 race driver at Virgin was, the task was a 2012 test and reserve driver. He switched to Lotus . D'Ambrosio has long been supported by Gravity , like the Lotus team, a subsidiary of Genii . In his role as a reserve driver, he was used at the Italian Grand Prix because regular driver Grosjean was banned. Vitantonio Liuzzi lost his regular cockpit at HRT, but stayed with the team as a test driver.

Jaime Alguersuari , who had lost his Toro Rosso cockpit, took over the position of test driver at the tire manufacturer Pirelli .

Rubens Barrichello left Formula 1 after 19 seasons and switched to KV Racing Technology in the IndyCar Series .

Karun Chandhok , who had completed a race for Lotus in 2011 and participated in several training sessions, left Formula 1 and started for JRM Racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2012 . Nick Heidfeld , who started the 2011 season with the Renault team and lost his cockpit during the season, also switched to the WEC. He started there for Rebellion Racing .

After the second Grand Prix, Adrian Sutil (formerly Force India) and Jarno Trulli (formerly Lotus) were the only preseason drivers without a contract.

Season preparation

7-10 February: Jerez

The first week of testing took place from February 7th to 10th at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. With the Caterham CT01 , the Ferrari F2012 , the Force India VJM05 , the Lotus E20 , the McLaren MP4-27 , the Red Bull RB8 , the Sauber C31 , the Toro Rosso STR7 and the Williams FW34 , nine cars made their track debut. Mercedes and HRT were on site with their chassis from the 2011 season and only took part in three (Mercedes) and two (HRT) test days. Marussia decided not to take part in this test week. The teams used the Pirelli tire compounds for the first time for the 2012 season.

At the start of the test on February 7th, Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest time (1: 19.670 minutes) ahead of Paul di Resta in the Force India and Nico Rosberg in the previous year's Mercedes. On the second day of the test, Michael Schumacher took the top position in the previous year's Mercedes with a time of 1: 18.561 minutes. Second and the fastest driver in a new race car was Red Bull -Pilot Mark Webber (1: 19.184 minutes) before Daniel Ricciardo in the Toro Rosso . On the third day of testing, Nico Rosberg (1: 17.613 minutes) was again a driver in the previous year's Mercedes. The best pilot in a 2012 model was Romain Grosjean in the Lotus with a best time of 1: 18.419 minutes. Sebastian Vettel was third in the Red Bull. On the fourth and last day of the first week of testing, Fernando Alonso was at the top of the ranking with a time of 1: 18.877 minutes. In second and third place followed Jean-Éric Vergne in the Toro Rosso and Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. Romain Grosjean thus achieved the weekly best time of a 2012 vehicle in the first week.

21.-24. February: Barcelona

The second week of testing took place from February 21st to 24th at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. In addition to the new vehicles that were already used in the first week of testing, the Mercedes F1 W03 was used for the first time. In addition, Marussia got involved in the test drives. However, still with the previous year's model. HRT decided not to participate.

On the first day of testing, Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap in the Red Bull with a time of 1: 23.265 minutes, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in the Force India and Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren . For Lotus the test day was stopped early after a few rounds a crack in, first used chassis ( E20 -02) was observed. The remainder of the test week was originally intended to continue with the other chassis (E20-01) that was used in the first week of testing. However, during investigations at the factory in Enstone , UK, the team found that the problems were due to a manufacturing error and that both chassis needed to be reworked. Lotus then canceled the further test drives this week. On the second day of the test, Hülkenberg was the fastest driver with a time of 1: 22.608 minutes ahead of Sergio Pérez in the Sauber . Both pilots achieved their time with the tire compound super soft . Third was Vettel. On the third day of testing, Pastor Maldonado achieved the fastest time in the Williams with 1: 22.391 minutes, almost a second ahead of Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes and Kamui Kobayashi in the Sauber. On the fourth day of the test, Kobayashi set the daily and weekly best times in the Sauber with a time of 1: 22.312 minutes. Maldonado came in second in Williams, third in Paul di Resta in Force India.

1st - 4th March: Barcelona

The third and final week of testing before the season also took place in Barcelona . Except for Marussia and HRT , all teams took part in the test. Marussia's new chassis did not pass the mandatory crash test. HRT was there with the motorhome, but the vehicle was not yet ready for use.

Lotus , which had to abandon the last test due to a chassis problem, was back on site and achieved the fastest time with Romain Grosjean (1: 23.252 minutes). Jenson Button ( McLaren ) and Sergio Pérez ( Sauber ) took second and third place. On the second day of the test, Grosjean kept the lead and improved the weekly best time to 1: 22.614 minutes. His compatriot Jean-Éric Vergne ( Toro Rosso ) was second, Sebastian Vettel ( Red Bull ) third . On the third day of testing, Pérez set the fastest time with 1: 22.094 minutes ahead of Button and Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso). On the last day of the test, Kimi Räikkönen achieved the best time in the Lotus with 1: 22.030 minutes. It was the fastest lap time ever for a 2012 car in Barcelona. Second was Fernando Alonso ( Ferrari ), Third Bruno Senna ( Williams ).
