The Formula One Teams Association ( FOTA ) was an association founded in 2008 of racing teams active in Formula 1 . On July 29, 2008, the team bosses of all Formula 1 teams active at the time agreed to found the association. The declared aim of FOTA was to work together with the sports association Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the marketing company Formula One Management (FOM) on questions of the regulations and the economic framework. The FOTA should therefore form the common interest group of the Formula 1 teams in the preparation of the regulations and a new Concorde Agreement . The formal establishment of the association took place on September 11, 2008, when Luca Cordero di Montezemolo (Ferrari) was elected chairman of FOTA. The chairmanship changes every year between the teams; McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh was elected to the office for 2010 and confirmed in this position in 2011.

On February 28, 2014, FOTA director Oliver Weingarten announced that the organization would be dissolved.

The membership of Williams and Force India was temporarily suspended in June 2009 after both teams independently agreed to the new conditions of the FIA ​​for the 2010 Formula 1 season , the remaining eight teams rejected the planned regulations. In September 2009 the two suspended teams were re-accepted into the association after the FIA-FOTA conflict had been resolved. HRT was no longer a FOTA member since December 2010 . Ferrari , Red Bull and Sauber announced their exit from FOTA in December 2011, as did Toro Rosso .

FOTA / FIA conflict 2009

In 2009, FOTA and FIA fought a month-long dispute over the regulations and conditions of participation for Formula 1 from 2010. This culminated on June 19, 2009, when the FOTA teams were known (excluding the Williams and Force India teams, which were suspended at the time) announced that they would prepare their own racing series for the 2010 season independently of the FIA. This would have meant a split in the racing series. In the 2010 Formula 1 season, with the exception of Williams and Force India, only new, previously unknown teams would have been represented. The main subject of the dispute was a voluntary budget ceiling provided by the FIA ​​for the participating teams. Racing teams that contest a Formula 1 season with a budget (but without personnel costs) of a maximum of 40 million British pounds (about 45 million euros) would be given greater freedom in the technical specifications for the vehicles. Teams with a higher annual budget, on the other hand, would have to follow more restrictive technical regulations.

Since the three teams Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso had previously contractually guaranteed participation in the 2010 season, FIA President Max Mosley announced on June 19, 2009 that he would take legal action against the teams for breach of contract. This plan was abandoned after two days, however, in order to resume negotiations with FOTA about participation in the 2010 Formula 1 season.

An agreement between the conflicting parties was reached on June 24, 2009. Accordingly, it was agreed that FIA President Mosley would not stand for re-election in October and that the regulations for the 2010 season would correspond to those of the previous year. In return, the FOTA teams registered to participate in the Formula 1 World Championship until 2012 and signed a new Concorde Agreement .
