Halil İbrahim Dinçdağ (* 1976 in Trabzon , Turkey ) is a former Turkish football referee and radio presenter who caused an international sensation through the outing of his homosexuality .

biography

Dinçdağ was football referee in the regional league from 1995 to 2008. Dinçdağ, who had initially postponed his military service , was drafted in October 2008. After his voluntary outing, he was transferred to the Military Medical Academy Gülhane ( Gülhane Askerî Tıp Akademisi , GATA) and finally retired on January 28, 2009 because of "psychosexual disorders" ( psikoseksüel bozukluklar ).

When he then wanted to be reappointed as an arbitrator, the Trabzon district association demanded that the military documents be inspected, as people who had been retired for health reasons are not allowed to act as arbitrators in Turkey. Due to his supposed lack of fitness, he was suspended. It was only later that the association's vice-president Lütfi Arıboğan said that Dinçdağ was "just a second-rate referee without talent and prospects for promotion to the first-class Süper Lig".

After his suspension, Dinçdağ appeared on Turkish television, revealing his name for the first time Dinçdağ and, if necessary, resigned from the European Court of Human Rights . The case led to a public discussion in Turkey about how to deal with homosexuality in male-dominated football; Reports in the international media followed.

In 2014 Dinçdağ was awarded the “Respect Prize” of the Berlin Alliance against Homophobia by the then Governing Mayor of Berlin , Klaus Wowereit . The Board of Trustees recognized him as a “ role model for lesbians and gays in Turkey, but also worldwide”.

On December 29, 2015, an Istanbul court sentenced the Turkish Football Association (TFF) to a fine of 7,200 euros for discrimination .
