Dziennik ( Polish = daily newspaper ) is a national Polish daily newspaper and has existed since April 18, 2006 as the foundation of the Polish subsidiary of Axel Springer AG , Axel Springer Polska .

Organization and program

The newspaper has its editorial office in Warsaw and sees itself as a “modern quality newspaper , which is aimed at a “young and educated readership who are equally interested in Polish, European and international topics” . The daily newspaper has been published every day except on Sundays at a price of 1.50 złoty since May 2006 with a circulation of around 259,000 copies.

As editor in chief was Robert Krasowski used, which up to that time as one of the senior editors at which also belongs to the Springer family fact worked. Grzegorz Jankowski , who is also the editor-in-chief of Fakt, is the editor of Dziennik. In general, most of the editors come from the well-trained team of the fact, which has been in existence for two years, which in a sense represents a Polish counterpart to the picture . Dziennik is intended to appeal more to the liberal-conservative, more educated audience and thus round off the portfolio of the expanding Springer publishing house. The newspaper thus entered into direct competition with Gazeta Wyborcza (newspaper of choice) and Rzeczpospolita (Republic). In doing so, Dziennik orients himself less on German and more on British models: In the Independent and Guardian , one might rather see parallels.

The newspaper's more manageable tabloid format is dominated by the news section. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung even described Dziennik as “an urban newspaper for drivers and stockholders” of the conservative satisfied.

The editors meticulously prepared for their potential readership by pre-producing a number of zero numbers with 200 employees months beforehand , which were then presented to test readers for evaluation.

The introduction of Dziennik was supported by a nationwide image - campaign accompanied, which started four days before the first issue; this included advertising in the classic print media , on radio , television and outdoor posters as well as other promotional campaigns.

Competition consequences

The result of the competition so far has been that, for the first time in years, Gazeta Wyborcza has raised its wages to keep employees, and the price of the newspaper has been almost halved - it now costs just 1.50 zloty instead of 2.80 zloty , d. H. about 40 cents. An expansion of the sports and TV section also showed the competition between both parties.

Campaigns and Surveys

On January 5, 2007, Dziennik published a survey she had commissioned about the already-designated Archbishop of Warsaw Stanislaw Wielgus because of his contacts with the secret service. Accordingly, 67 percent of those questioned believed that Wielgus should step down from his position. The 67-year-old former Bishop of Plock is said to have spied on fellow officials for years as an informant for the communist secret service. Only 20% would have accepted him as archbishop. Two days later, Wielgus offered his resignation before the official inauguration, which the papal nunciature offered as an appropriate solution on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. assumed.

In the meantime, Cardinal Józef Glemp , the Primate of the Catholic Church in Poland, came under increasing criticism of the newspaper, which apparently sees itself as the critical mouthpiece of the modern conservative forces in Poland and blends commentary and news on the front page to one verdict: “The big mistake of the primate: [he] (...) stood before the believers to say clearly: If it depended on me, Wielgus would be archbishop. "

Current development

In June 2009, Axel Springer Polska announced that it would bring Dziennik into a joint venture with the Polish Infor Biznes Sp.z oo, a subsidiary of the publishing company Infor PL.SA. The merger of the loss-making Dziennik with the profitable business daily Gazeta Prawna resulted in the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna , in which Springer holds 49 percent. The trade press sees this step as an admission of the failure of Springers' quality newspaper ambitions in Poland.
