Martin Whitmarsh (* 29 April 1958 in England ) is a British businessman and was from March 2009 to the end of the 2013 season team boss of McLaren - Formula 1 teams . In 2010 he was also the chairman of the Formula 1 team association FOTA .

Career

After successfully studying mechanical engineering in 1980, he started out as an engineer at British Aerospace . In 1988 he became the company's chief engineer before joining McLaren in 1989. There he has been working with Ron Dennis since the beginning . Since 2005 he has been the racing team's chief operating officer . At the presentation of the McLaren-Mercedes MP4-24 on January 16, 2009, Ron Dennis announced that he would hand over his position as Team Principal to Whitmarsh on March 1, 2009. There were no outstanding successes in the Whitmarsh era. Up until 2012 McLaren was second and third in the constructors' championship twice, but against Red Bull Racing the McLaren were mostly able to do little. During this time, McLaren also lost its outstanding position with the engine supplier Mercedes: As of 2011, the team was only one of several customer teams that were supplied with Mercedes engines. It also competed with the Mercedes works team . In 2013 McLaren dropped to fifth; this year the drivers did not achieve a victory or a podium finish. After the 2013 season was over, Whitmarsh was replaced in January 2014 and replaced by Ron Dennis.
