Anthony Francis "Tony" Fernandes , CBE (born 1964 in Kuala Lumpur ) is a Malaysian entrepreneur .

Life

He is u. a. Founder of Tune Air Sdn. Bhd. , from which the first low-cost airline in Malaysia with the name AirAsia emerged . He took over the heavily indebted AirAsia, whose fleet consisted of two machines, on December 2, 2001 for a ringgit (24 cents).

He also founded a racing team that he called the Caterham F1 Team . This was eligible to start in Formula 1 from 2010 . Fernandes has also been the owner of the English car manufacturer Caterham Cars and the GP2 team Caterham Racing since April 2011 and has been the main shareholder of the English football club Queens Park Rangers since August 2011 .

In the summer of 2014, he sold his Formula 1 racing team Caterham to a consortium of companies in Switzerland - just before they filed for bankruptcy. On December 22, 2014, he sold 850,000 shares in AirAsia's travel insurance company, Tune Insurance Holdings. He sold another 94,800 of these shares one day later. This attracted attention as on December 28, 2014, AirAsia and its travel insurer suffered considerable damage from the loss of the QZ8501 aircraft.

  • The Forbes Magazine Asia valued Fernandes 2011 on a fortune of 615 million US dollars; thus he reached 15th place on the list of the 40 richest Malaysians.
  • The same magazine named the entrepreneur "Asia Businessman of the Year" in 2010
  • The French government made Fernandes a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2010
  • 2011, the British Queen gave the Malaysians for his services to the relationships in business and education between Malaysia and the United Kingdom the Order "Commander of the British Empire" (CBE)
