Caterham Racing is the name of a Malaysian GP2 series racing team . The racing team joined the GP2 Asia series and the GP2 series in 2011 as Team AirAsia . In 2012 the name was changed to Caterham Racing. The racing team was associated with the Formula 1 team Caterham until mid-2014 .

History in the GP2 series

For the 2011 GP2 Asia series season , the team entered the GP2 series under the name Team Air Asia . The team was named after the Malaysian low-cost airline AirAsia owned by team boss Tony Fernandes and, like the Formula 1 racing team Lotus , was owned by him. In 2011, Luiz Razia and Davide Valsecchi, two test drivers from the Lotus Formula 1 racing team , acted as drivers . In the GP2 Asia series, with Valsecchi finishing third as the best result, they achieved seventh place in the team ranking. In the season of the main series, Valsecchi scored the first victory for the team at the main race in Monaco . Both drivers achieved two podium finishes and the team finished the season in sixth place in the team standings. The team renamed itself Caterham Team Air Asia during the season . In the course of the renaming, the paintwork of the cars was adapted to that of the Formula 1 team and the green-yellow color combination was adopted. Before that, the team started with white and red cars, the colors of AirAsia.

For the 2012 season , the racing team started as Caterham Racing . The Formula 1 racing team also took on the name Caterham that year. The two drivers from the previous year both switched to other teams within the series, so that Caterham hired two new drivers. The choice fell on Rodolfo González and Giedo van der Garde . Both drivers had already raced in the GP2 series for several years. Van der Garde consistently scored points during the season and achieved two victories, making him sixth overall. González scored once and lost to van der Garde with six to 160 points. In the end, he finished 22nd overall. In the team standings, Caterham finished the season in seventh place.

In 2013 van der Garde got a cockpit at Caterham in Formula 1, González became a test driver at Marussia . The new drivers for the 2013 GP2 series were Sergio Canamasas and Ma Qinghua . While Canamasas drove the entire season, Ma was replaced by Alexander Rossi after the first race . On May 17th, a new title sponsor was announced with EQ8, with which the team started under the name EQ8 Caterham Racing from the race in Monte Carlo . Rossi was already convincing in his first run of the season and finished on the podium. In the further course of the season Rossi regularly scored points. In the main race of the last round in Abu Dhabi, he achieved his first victory in the GP2 series, which he ultimately finished in ninth place in the overall standings. Canamasas went into the points twice and was defeated by Rossi with three to 92 points, making him 25th overall. In the team classification, Caterham deteriorated to ninth place.

In 2014 Rossi stayed with Caterham and got a new team-mate in Rio Haryanto , who is entering his third GP2 season. While Fernandes sold the Caterham Formula 1 team in July, the GP2 team remained in his possession. Rossi separated from both racing teams shortly afterwards. Tom Dillmann took over his cockpit in the GP2 series . At the end of the 2014 season, Caterham ended its GP2 involvement. The GP2 starting place will then be taken over by Status Grand Prix .

Further involvement in motorsport

In 2012 and 2013, Caterham supported the Arden International racing team in their races in the Formula Renault 3.5 . In both years one car was painted in the Caterham colors. Alexander Rossi and Pietro Fantin drove this vehicle.
