The GP2 round in Monte Carlo 2013 was the fourth round of the 2013 GP2 series and took place from May 23rd to 25th at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo .
Reports
background
The event took place in the framework of the Monaco Grand Prix .
After the race in Barcelona , Stefano Coletti led the drivers' standings with 17 points ahead of Felipe Nasr and 39 points ahead of Fabio Leimer . Carlin led the team standings with six points ahead of Rapax and 43 points ahead of Racing Engineering .
Due to the full supporting program of the Monaco Grand Prix, the race weekend was held from Thursday to Saturday.
Before this run, Caterham Racing renamed itself EQ8 Caterham Racing .
For the first time in the season there were no changes in the starting field.
training
In free practice, Sam Bird set the fastest time in front of his teammates Tom Dillmann and Mitch Evans .
Qualifying
The qualifying was divided into two sections with two groups in order to avoid obstructions on the narrow course in Monte Carlo. In the first section, group A, the drivers with an odd start number, and then Group B, the drivers with an even start number. The ratings of the two sections were not combined, instead the placements within the group decided on the starting positions. The group with the fastest driver got the odd, the other group the even starting positions.
In Group A, Johnny Cecotto jr. the fastest lap ahead of Bird and Kevin Ceccon . In Group B, the second Arden driver Evans set the fastest time ahead of Leimer and Jolyon Palmer . Cecotto drove 16 thousandths of a second faster than Evans and secured pole position.
Following qualifying, René Binder was given a three-position penalty for obstructing Sergio Canamasas .
Main race
Cecotto did not start well from pole position and was overtaken directly by Evans. Leimer also started better than Cecotto and they drove side by side towards the first corner. Cecotto braked late and slipped into the tire wall. Leimer had no opportunity to turn into the curve on the outside lane and collided with Cecotto. At the same time, Ceccon and Bird collided, with Ceccon pulling off the front wing and Bird the rear wing. To avoid a collision with Ceccon, Palmer slowed down hard and turned. Julian Leal collided with him. Since a large part of the route was blocked, there was a pile-up. The race was then interrupted. To get the track clear again quickly, the marshals pushed some drivers to start their engine.
For Nathanaël Berthon , Cecotto, Marcus Ericsson , Robin Frijns , Kevin Giovesi , Leal, Leimer, Palmer and Alexander Rossi , however, the race was over. Daniel Abt , Dillmann, Rio Haryanto and Jake Rosenzweig were also involved in the accident, but their vehicles remained undamaged and they were able to restart the race. Canamasas, who had stopped at the start, also started the race again.
During the one-hour break, the vehicles were repaired by Bird and Ceccon so that they could also take part in the restart.
The restart took place behind the safety car , which pitted after one lap. When the race was released there were no changes of position. Evans led before Bird, Ceccon, Nasr, Calado and Stéphane Richelmi .
The race was then decided by the pit stops. Ceccon was the first of the top 3 to come in for the pit stop. Evans came to his stop a lap later and fell behind Ceccon. Bird, who had put pressure on Evans for a long time, then set fast lap times. After his pit stop, he kept the lead and pulled away from the rest of the field.
Bird won the race 22 seconds ahead of Ceccon. Behind them were Evans, Nasr, Calado and Coletti. The points for the fastest lap went to Coletti and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs secured the reverse grid pole position.
Sprint race
Cecotto was excluded from this race for causing the start collision in the main race.
In contrast to the main race, the sprint race was started standing again. Quaife-Hobbs didn’t do well but kept the lead. Binder next to him also started badly and fell back to sixth. Coletti was the new runner-up, followed by Calado. However, the latter was overtaken by Evans on the first lap. Meanwhile, Abt and Trummer received a drive-through penalty for early starts.
Coletti immediately started putting pressure on Quaife-Hobbs and passed him on lap three. Then he sat down and controlled the race. Bird and Dillmann both had to make a pit stop and thus lost the chance for points.
Coletti won the race ahead of Quaife-Hobbs and Evans. The remaining points went to Nasr, Calado Binder Ceccon and Richelmi. The points for the fastest lap went to Coletti.
