Daniël de Jong (born July 9, 1992 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch automobile racing driver . From 2011 to 2013 he competed in the Auto GP . From 2012 to 2016 de Jong started in the GP2 series .

Career

De Jong began his motorsport career in karting in 2000 and was active in this sport until 2007. In 2008 de Jong switched to formula racing and competed in several series for MP Motorsport , the racing team of his father Henk de Jong. He was 13th in the Northern European Formula Renault and eighth in the Formula Renault NEZ. In addition, he took part in a racing weekend for the Western European Formula Renault. In 2009 he improved himself to ninth place overall in the Northern European Formula Renault with two podium finishes. He also made his debut in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished the season in 25th place in the championship. In 2010, de Jong stayed with MP Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. At the season opener he achieved his only podium finish in the season with a second place, which he finished in ninth place. He also took part in six races of the northern European Formula Renault. He decided a race for himself and took eleventh place in the drivers' standings.

In 2011 de Jong started together with Daniel McKenzie for Comtec Racing in the Formula Renault 3.5 . At the season finale, he scored his only points in ninth place. He finished the season in 29th place in the drivers' championship. In 2011 , de Jong also took part in several Auto GP races for MP Motorsport . At the end of the season he was 14th overall. In 2012 , de Jong completed the entire Auto GP World Series season for MP Motorsport. With a second place as the best result, he finished fifth in the drivers' championship. He was thus defeated by his team mate Chris van der Drift , who was fourth. In addition, de Jong made his debut in the GP2 series this season . For Rapax he took part in four racing weekends. De Jong had already carried out GP2 test drives for Rapax in early 2012 with a view to 2013. He finished 26th overall.

In 2013 de Jong switched to the GP2 series together with MP Motorsport. With a seventh place as the best result, he finished the season in 24th place overall. His teammates Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Dani Clos both achieved a podium finish. In addition, in 2013 he took part in all Auto GP races for MP Motorsport that did not overlap with the GP2 involvement. With a second place as the best result, he was seventh in the drivers' standings at the end of the season. In 2014 de Jong competed again for MP Motorsport in the GP2 series. While his teammate Marco Sørensen finished eleventh overall with one win and 47 points, de Jong finished 28th overall with two points at the end of the season. In addition, de Jong drove in the Acceleration MW-V6 Pickup Series in 2014 and was fourth overall. In 2015 , de Jong completed his fourth GP2 season for the family racing team MP Motorsport. At the main race in Spa-Francorchamps he collided with Pierre Gasly in the Blanchimont and hit the tire wall at high speed. De Jong broke a vertebra in the process. He was immediately taken to the hospital and operated on. For the next five races he was injured. He then went to the last two events for Trident Racing . He was 23rd in the drivers' championship.

GP2 series In 2016 de Jong competed again for MP Motorsport in the GP2 series. It was his last GP2 season. With an eighth place as the best result, he reached the 21st championship place, which is his best overall GP2 placement. Internally he was defeated by his teammate Oliver Rowland with 6 to 107 points.
