Christopher Jason "Chris" van der Drift (born March 8, 1986 in Hamilton (New Zealand) ) is a New Zealand - Dutch racing driver . He competes with a New Zealand racing license. In 2008 he became the master of the international Formula Master . In 2010 and 2011 he started in the Superleague Formula . In 2015 he became champion in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

Career

At the age of seven, van der Drift began his motorsport career in karting in 1994 , in which he was active until 2003. In 2004 he switched to Team Rosberg in the German Formula BMW , where he was fourth overall. In 2005, van der Drift stayed with Team Rosberg in this series and once again finished fourth in the overall standings with a win. In 2006 van der Drift was active in several racing series and was both runner-up in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he won two races, and runner-up in the northern European Formula Renault . A year later , van der Drift started in the newly founded International Formula Masterand took the runner-up behind Jérôme D'Ambrosio with two wins . In 2008 van der Drift stayed in the International Formula Master. In both seasons he drove for JD Motorsport . Van der Drift won six races in the season and was already the champion one race weekend before the end.

In the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 van der Drift started for Trident Racing . Although he was eighth overall after two race weekends, he was replaced by Adrián Vallés . After taking part in four races of the A1GP season 2008/2009 , van der Drift drove for Epsilon Euskadi in the Formula Renault 3.5 in 2009 . With a third place as the best result, he finished eleventh overall at the end of the season. For the 2010 season, van der Drift switched to the Superleague Formula and initially started for the Olympiacos Piraeus team, which is managed by GU-Racing International . Van der Drift had a serious accident in the second race at Brands Hatch . Shortly before the end of the race there was a duel between him and Julien Jousse . While trying to overtake him, his left front wheel hit the right rear wheel of the opponent. Van der Drift rose into the air and his car crashed into a bridge pillar on the exit of the Surtees curve. The car caught fire briefly and skidded over the track. Except for the monocoque, the car was dismantled into all its individual parts. The race was stopped immediately after the accident. Van der Drift was admitted to hospital with a broken ankle and injuries to his shoulder and hand. He remained conscious the entire time. As a result, he had to pause for several races and did not return until the season finale. However, he competed for a different team at this event. Van der Drift won four races in the season.

In 2011 van der Drift initially returned to Formula Renault 3.5 and started for Mofaz Racing . After the first four race weekends he had to give up his cockpit because he couldn't raise the budget any further. At the end of the season he finished ninth overall with third place as the best result. He then returned to the Superleague Formula and took part in one of two events. Fourth place was his best result. In 2012 van der Drift competed in the Auto GP World Series for Manor MP Motorsport . He did not take part in the last race of the season. With a win, he finished the season in fourth place and thus prevailed internally against Daniël de Jong , who was fifth. In addition, van der Drift gained experience in GT / touring car racing series aside from formula racing . He took part in four races each of the Italian GT Championship and the V8SuperTourer . In 2013 he started in the International GT Open and finished eighth overall with one win and three poles. In 2014 he stayed in GT Sport and took part in the Blancpain Sprint Series and the Blancpain Endurance Series - Pro Am, but remained without major successes. He also tested a V8 supercar in Australia. In 2015 he was instant champion in the Asian series of the Porsche Carrera Cup and took part in an event of the Brazilian Stock Car Series. He also drove the Bathurst 12 Hours. In 2016 he started a race in the German GT Masters and competed in the V8 Supercars series in the Enduro Cup. At the same time he drove a race in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia (pole + victory) and again the Bathurst 12h. In 2017 he finished second overall in the China GT Series in the GT3 category and competes in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. Van der Drift also works as a coach for young drivers in various series.
