Brigitte Broch

Brigitte Broch (born November 21, 1943 in Köslin ) is a German production designer . In 2002 she won an Oscar for her work on the film Moulin Rouge , and in 1997 she was nominated for William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet .

Life

Broch was born in 1943 in the town of Köslin, which was then part of the Pomeranian Province . As a displaced person, her parents settled in Solingen in 1945 . Broch left school prematurely at the age of 17, initially going to England temporarily ; then, after living in Hamburg for a while , she moved to Mexico in 1968 , where a friend of hers already lived. In Mexico Broch worked as a secretary and teacher for German and English. In addition, she completed training as an interpreter.

As early as the 1980s, she came into contact with the Mexican film business as an actress and producer in smaller films. Due to her interest in various forms of artistic expression, she worked mainly as a set designer and art director in numerous Mexican productions from the beginning of the 1990s . In 1992 she worked with Guillermo del Toro in the film Cronos . For the films El jardín del Edén (1995), La otra conquista (1999) and Amores Perros (2000) Broch was nominated for an Ariel Award , the most important Mexican film award, which she won in 2000 with the film Sexo, pudor y lágrimas gar could win.

In the mid-90s, international films were also part of her work with Wilder Zauber and William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet . For the latter, she and Catherine Martin were nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Production Design at the 1997 Academy Awards. In 2002 Broch and Martin were nominated again for an Oscar for best production design for their work in the film Moulin Rouge by Baz Luhrmann and this time they won the award.

In the following years she worked for several films with director Alejandro González Iñárritu . B. 21 Gramm , Biutiful and Babel starring Brad Pitt , for whom she received a nomination at the Art Directors Guild Awards .
