The GP2 run in Spielberg 2014 took place from June 20-22 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg and was the fourth run of the 2014 GP2 series .

Reports

background

The event took place in the framework of the Austrian Grand Prix .

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Jolyon Palmer led the drivers' standings with 46 points ahead of Felipe Nasr and 54 points ahead of Johnny Cecotto Jr. on. DAMS led the team standings with 30 points ahead of Carlin and 64 points ahead of Trident Racing .

At the Spielberg run, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Qualifying

When qualifying began, dark clouds hung over the track and rain was predicted. All drivers drove out of the pit lane early and set their first times. Cecotto drove the best time here. After 15 minutes it started to rain lightly and the times on the second attempt were slower for most of the drivers, so Cecotto kept the lead and secured pole position.

Main race

The front row started badly and Nasr, starting from third, took the lead. In the first laps, Nasr pulled away from Cecotto, who was put under pressure by Coletti and Palmer. On lap five, Coletti and Palmer finally passed Cecotto in a curve. While Nasr opponents were in the pits earlier and were fighting for positions, Nasr waited until ten laps before the end to pit and kept the lead. At the same time, Coletti was overtaken first by Vandoorne and finally by Marciello and dropped back to fourth. Nasr won the race ahead of Vandoorne and Marciello. It was Nasr's first win in a main race in the GP2 series.

Sprint race

Rossi and Evans started badly from the front row and lost both positions. The new leader was Cecotto. As the race continued, the Racing Engineering drivers Coletti and Marciello set fast lap times and placed second and third. The winner of the main race, Nasr, had damaged his front wing at the start and a short time later he received a request from the race management to have it repaired. When he pitted, Nasr ended the race early.

Cecotto won the race ahead of Coletti and Marciello. Coletti received the two points for the fastest lap.

Registration list

All teams and drivers use the Dallara GP2 / 11 chassis , Renault - Mecachrome engines and Pirelli tires .
