Raffaele "Lello" Marciello (born December 17, 1994 in Zurich , Switzerland ) is an Italian racing driver . He started in the European Formula 3 Championship in 2012 and 2013 and won it in 2013. Since 2014 he has been driving in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series).

Career

Marciello began his motorsport career in karting and was mainly active in this sport until 2009. In 2010 he was accepted into the funding program by Scuderia Ferrari . He took part in a karting event that year, but his main focus was on formula racing , in which he competed in Formula Abarth . Starting for JD Motorsport , he won his debut race. In the further course of the season, two more victories followed, one of which was achieved in a non-championship race. He finished third in the championship. In 2011 Marciello moved to the Prema Powerteam in the Italian Formula 3 championship . He finished the season with two wins in third place overall. With 13 points behind his teammate Michael Lewis , who finished second, he was the second best driver on his team. In addition, he took part in an event for the FIA Formula 3 Trophy 2011 for the Prema Powerteam .

At the beginning of 2012 , Marciello started for M2 Competition in the Toyota Racing Series , New Zealand's highest monoposto series. He won a race and finished the overall standings in ninth place. He then switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series , where he received a cockpit for the Prema Powerteam for the 2012 season . In 2012 he was also eligible for the European Formula 3 championship , which included some Formula 3 Euro Series races. While his teammate Daniel Juncadella won both championships, Marciello was third overall in the Formula 3 Euro Series with seven wins. In the European Formula 3 championship he finished second with 228.5 to 252 points behind Juncadella. In 2013 Marciello stayed with Prema Powerteam in the European Formula 3 championship. Marciello won 13 of the 30 races and achieved a total of 21 podium finishes. At the Nürburgring , he won all three races starting from pole position and only failed to set the fastest lap in one race. Marciello won the championship in a duel with Felix Rosenqvist with 489.5 to 457 points.

Marciello started in the Florida Winter Series in early 2014 . Two second places were his best results. Marciello then switched to Racing Engineering in the 2014 GP2 series . Two third places in Spielberg were his first points. In the main race at Spa-Francorchamps he won in the rain. He prevailed in the duel against Stoffel Vandoorne . Marciello stood on the podium four times in total. With 74 to 136 points he was internally defeated by Stefano Coletti and finished eighth overall. He also completed a Formula 1 test drive for Ferrari . In 2015 Marciello switched to Trident within the GP2 series . Three second places were his best results and he moved up to seventh overall. He had changing teammates that year, whom he clearly beat internally with 110 to one point. Marciello also acted as test and reserve driver for the Sauber Formula 1 team in 2015 . Ferrari ended its promotion at the end of the year. In 2016 Marciello completed his third GP2 season for the Russian Time team, managed by Virtuosi Racing UK . Although he did not win a race, he improved to fourth place in the drivers' standings as the best driver without a win.

From the fifth race weekend in Spielberg , Marciello will return to Trident in the GP2 series, which has since been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship . He will take over the cockpit from Sergio Canamasas .
