Career
Piercarlo Ghinzani drove for a few years in the Italian and European Formula 3 championships for the Euroracing team led by Gianpaolo Pavanello, which managed Alfa Romeo's Formula 1 operations in the early 1980s and continued to work a few years later under the name EuroBrun . In 1977 Ghinzani became Formula 3 European Champion . In 1980 he was briefly involved in the Italian Dywa project, which had built a car for the British Aurora series . The team registered for only one race in this series, namely for Lotteria Monza . However, it did not take place in the end, so that Ghinzani was not used either.
Then Ghinzani contested a total of 76 Formula 1 races from 1981 to 1989, he was under contract with Osella , Toleman , Ligier and Zakspeed . At 31 Grand Prix he could not qualify for the race. Although he qualified in four races, he was unable to start for various reasons. Piercarlo Ghinzani celebrated his greatest success in 1984 when he finished fifth on an Osella at the US Grand Prix in Dallas and scored his only championship points.
Ghinzani took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race four times , but retired each time due to technical defects.
In 1992 Piercarlo Ghinzani founded his own racing team called Team Ghinzani , which is based in Bergamo and has been represented in various motorsport classes throughout its history. The Ghinzani team has been involved in the Italian Formula 3 championship for many years. Between 2005 and 2009 it also took part in the A1GP racing series , where it provided A1 Team Italy .
Piercarlo Ghinzani maintains a collection of historic racing cars. It includes an Osella FA1E , an Osella FA1F and a Toleman TG 185. Ghinzani drove these cars during his active career as a Formula 1 driver.
