Russo was a talented driver in the lower formula classes. In 1964 he became the first champion of Italian Formula 3 . He also took part in three Grand Prix of the Automobile World Championship from 1964 to 1966 . In 1964 he drove a Brabham for Rob Walker Racing, but did not qualify for the race. In 1965 and 1966 he competed in individual races for the Lotus factory team .
He died in 1967 in a serious accident in an Italian Formula 3 race in Caserta. After a mass accident in which Ernesto Brambilla , Clay Regazzoni , Jürg Dubler , Romano Perdomi and Corrado Manfredini were involved, Beat Fehr stopped his vehicle and ran back to warn the following vehicles. In the next group of vehicles was Russo, who could no longer avoid the collision with Fehr, who was killed in the process. Russos Matra then drove into a wall and he died in the fire that followed. Perdomi was also killed in this accident.
