500 km race on the Nürburgring 1966
The seventh 500 km race on the Nürburgring , also the International ADAC 500 km race, Nürburgring , was held on September 4, 1966 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the 12th round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
In 1965 , for the first time since the race was launched, no Abarth driver had won the overall standings. The two Bianchi brothers Lucien and Mauro won the race on a works - Alpine M65 . Alpine also registered racing cars for the 500 km race in 1966. This time, Mauro Bianchi drove an Alpine A210 , with which he achieved the fastest lap time of 9: 25.100 minutes in qualifying.
The race that started on Sunday at 11 a.m. was the second world championship run on the Nordschleife this year. While the 1,000 km race , which ended with the victory of Joakim Bonnier and Phil Hill in the Chaparral 2D , attracted 250,000 spectators, the 500 km race attracted 15,000. After the Le Mans start , Mauro Bianchi took the lead in the first round. After the first lap he was leading in front of Ernst Furtmayr ( Abarth 1300 OT ), Udo Schütz ( Abarth 1300SP ) and the Austrian Johannes Ortner , who also drove an Abarth 1300SP. In the third lap, when entering the south bend , there was a pile-up . The Briton Ian Alexander had overturned in his Diva GT and blocked the route for the following cars. Several vehicles drove into each other and were eliminated. At halftime of the race, Mauro Bianchi pitted for the second refueling stop, Udo Schütz took over the top of the race in the Abarth. Schütz had to give up the race on lap 16 after a gearbox failure (he was classified as 34th), which allowed Bianchi to take the lead again. A damage to the suspension put an end to the Belgian’s ambitions for a second overall victory with three laps to go. This went to Ernst Furtmayr, who at the finish had a lead of over a minute over Bianchi's team-mate Roger Delageneste .
