The ASA 411 was the racing version of the Italian sports car ASA 1000 GT . Until the closure of the manufacturer Autocostruzione, it was built in small numbers and only used a few times in races. The sporting success was moderate.
history
In order to increase sales of the ASA 1000 GT, ASA tried to make the vehicle better known through racing. Two modified 1000 GTs were used on the 1965 Targa Florio for this purpose. In the same year, the racing version of the 1000 GT, the 411, was presented at the Salon de l'Automobile in Paris. It was a coupé body by Carrozzeria Marazzi , which basically followed the design of the 1000 GT, but had a light metal body with headlamp lenses tilted backwards. The engine was enlarged to 1.1 liters so that the racing car could better compete in the class up to 1100 cc. It is not known how many 411s were made up to 1967.
Racing
Three ASA 411s were registered at the 1966 Targa Florio , but only number 214 was a car of this type. Driven by Silvestre Semilia and Raffaele Pinto , he achieved 21st place in the overall ranking and 5th place in the class ranking of prototypes up to 2000 cm³.
Description of the vehicle
engine
The engine is a four-cylinder, four-stroke gasoline engine. The cylinders are arranged in series and the pistons run in wet cylinder liners . The cylinder head and block are made of light metal. The camshaft, driven by a chain, is located in the cylinder head and controls the valves via rocker arms. Each cylinder has two valves hanging at a V angle of 60 °. The cooler is located in front of the engine and holds 5 liters of liquid. The oil needs to be changed every 4000 km.
Power transmission
The power is transmitted from the engine to the transmission via a single-disc dry clutch. There was a choice of a fully synchronized four-speed gearbox from Humber with overdrive from Auto Transmissions for gears 2, 3 and 4 or a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox from Fiat without overdrive. In both transmissions, 4th gear is directly translated. The power is then transferred from the gearbox to the hypoid axle drive on the rear axle.
Chassis and chassis
The chassis is a tubular frame construction with two oval longitudinal members. At the front, the wheels are individually suspended on triangular wishbones of unequal length with coil springs , telescopic shock absorbers and corner stabilizers . At the rear there is a rigid axle on trailing arms and Watt linkage with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. The car has a hydraulically operated dual-circuit brake system with disc brakes on all four wheels. The handbrake works on the rear wheels. The steering is a rack and pinion steering.
body
The body was built by Carrozzeria Marazzi and essentially corresponds to that of the ASA 1000 GT Coupé with hatchback. The main external differences, apart from the headlights tilting backwards, are the air scoop on the bonnet, the lack of air outlets in the front fenders and the quick tank cap on the right rear fender. To save weight, the body was made of light metal. Side windows and rear window are made of plastic. The front side windows can be slid to open, the rear windows can be opened. The car is said to have been around 110 kg lighter than the ASA 1000 GT.
Vehicle designations
411
Officially, the vehicle only has the designation 411, composed of 4- cylinder 1 , 1 liter.
