Hill won the Le Mans 24 Hours three times : in 1958, 1961 and 1962 together with Olivier Gendebien in a Ferrari. He was also able to win the 12-hour race in Sebring and the 1000 km in Argentina three times. In 1966 he and Joakim Bonnier drove the chaparral to victory in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring with the 2-speed automatic transmission, which is unusual for a racing car.
After his active career Hill worked as a commentator for the ABC telecast Wide World of Sports . He also wrote for Road & Track Magazine .
A few years before his death, Phil Hill had a state-of-the-art race track built in Savannah, America. He designed this racetrack together with the Australian track architect Bob Barnard . The race course consists of two independent courses that can be used in 16 different ways.
Hill died of complications from Parkinson's disease in Monterey County Hospital in late August 2008 , just days after appearing as a judge for the 40th time at the traditional Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance .
