500km Mugello race in 1967

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Günter Klass had a fatal accident in training on a Ferrari Dino 206SP

The 500 km race of Mugello 1967 , also the Trofeo Frescobaldi, Mugello, Circuito del Mugello , took place on July 23 at the Circuito stradale del Mugello and was the ninth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

Car races have been held on the Circuito stradale del Mugello since 1914. With a track length of 66.200 kilometers, it was the race with the longest circuit of the season. As with the Targa Florio , in the 500 km race, the drivers started the race with their vehicles at the same time, but at intervals. In training on the Saturday before the race day, the organizers were confronted with the tragic consequences of a fatal accident for the first time since the event was held in 1914.

Günter Klass was registered from Scuderia Ferrari with team partner Jonathan Williams in a Ferrari Dino 206P . A second works car, a Dino 206S , was prepared for Ludovico Scarfiotti and Nino Vaccarella . A Dino 206SP was used as a training car , with which Klass had a fatal accident. On a fast stretch between Firenzuola and the approach to Passo del Giogo , the Ferrari came off the road in a left curve and hit a tree with the right side of the vehicle. The Ferrari tradition of right-hand drive was the undoing , as parts of the tree rose from the right to the center of the vehicle. Klass was quickly rescued by spectators, and a rescue team was quickly on hand to take the seriously injured man to a helicopter . Klass was flown with it to a hospital in Florence , but succumbed to serious injuries during transport.

After Klass' death, Ferrari withdrew the two registered cars from the race. The factory team of Porsche thus lost its main competitors. The two eight-cylinder - 910 of Udo Schütz / Gerhard Mitter and Jochen Neerpasch / Rolf Stommelen the German team celebrated a superior double victory.
