Event Horizon ( dt. : Event horizon ) is an installation of the British sculptor Antony Gormley , which as a traveling exhibition was conceived. The installation is art in public space , consisting of 31 sculptures . The figures stand on the street and on the roofs where they can be seen from the street. Each sculpture is slightly different from the other. They are always placed in cities so that one can see the next from one sculpture.

background

Antony Gormley has been an artist since the mid-1980s. Over the years he has made a name for himself in the art scene with his works of art. Gormley works conceptually. The focus of his artistic work is the human body. Gormley uses this as a medium for the experience of space and the world in a coordinate system of social and aesthetic relationships. His best known work is the oversized Angel of the North at Gateshead ( Tyne and Wear ). Other works by Gormley include Quantum Cloud in London , Another Place on the beach at the mouth of the River Mersey , on Crosby Beach north of Liverpool and Horizon Field in the Alps .

Regarding the installation of Event Horizon in Hong Kong , Gormley said the following in 2015:

“Event Horizon” is about perception. It's actually a minor thing that I did. It is the interruption of the horizon by the relatively dark human silhouettes. The sculptures contrast with the illuminated sky. They appear like dark holes in human shape. "

Gormley wanted to trigger the following in viewers of his installation:

“This installation is very static. The viewer is urged to be motionless as well. The goal is for people to begin to read their surroundings - to perceive them more precisely. Passers-by should recognize the dialogue between the different buildings in the city. In addition, the sculptures should look like acupuncture needles. The small needles should dip into the body of the city and ease the tension of such a large metropolis a little. "

In this context he chose the name “ Event Horizon ” for his installation from physics .

Sculptures

The life-size sculptures all appear in an anatomically correct posture and they are all shown naked. Their hands are stretched down and their heads are slightly bowed. Gormley had made all of the sculptures in his own image. Therefore, they are 188 cm tall. Four cast iron figures stand in the street. Each individual sculpture weighs around 630 kg. The remaining 27 statues made of fiberglass stand on the roofs of the metropolis. Each of these sculptures weighs around 30 kg.

Metropolises

The installation was set up in the following metropolises in sequence:

Exhibitions (selection)

  • 2007: Part of the Blind Light exhibition at the Hayward Gallery regarding Antony Gormley
  • 2008: Part of an exhibition in Rotterdam
  • 2012: Part of the exhibition Still Being ( pt : Corpos Presentes ) at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in São Paulo and then in Rio de Janeiro

The installation should actually be installed in Hong Kong in 2014. However, the installation was canceled after investment banker Dennis Li Junjie jumped to his death from the roof of the JPMorgan Chase bank . Six months before the installation in 2015, Hong Kong had informed its citizens about the exhibition. This should not confuse the sculptures with potential suicides, as in the previous cities where the exhibition toured. Despite this, the police have been repeatedly notified of potential suicides by concerned citizens, as in other cities before.

Trivia

One of the sculptures was shown in the opening credits of the first episode of Ashes to Ashes - Back to the 80s .

Other works

Gormley took up the subject again in other contexts:

  • Time Horizon 100 figures were set up in 2006 in the Archaeological Park of Scolacium on the edge of an olive grove. These figures look in different directions and therefore have a significantly different aura.
