The installation was initially created for the joint project “Follow Me - British Art on the Lower Elbe” of the Cuxhaven Art Association, initiated by the Stade Landscape Association, and set up in 1995 in the Wadden Sea off Cuxhaven . The 100 life-size body figures cast from iron were produced in 17 variants from body casts of Gormley by the iron foundries Hargreaves and Joseph & Jesse Siddons. They each weigh around 650 kilograms .

The figures were spread over an area of 1.75 square kilometers, at distances between 50 and 250 meters and facing the horizon. The back of the figures faced the beach. The figures erected near the water were completely free; the closer they got to the beach, the more they were partly buried in the sand. Depending on the ebb and flow of the tide, some of the figures were in the water or could be reached on foot. As part of the art project in Cuxhaven, they clarified the idea of the unknown, the infinite, the view of a bank that is not visible and this referred to the people who emigrated to America from the Hapaghallen in Cuxhaven harbor.

After Cuxhaven the installation moved to Stavanger in Norway, and in summer 2003 it was part of the Beauford Triennale in De Panne . The installation has been on permanent display north of Liverpool on Crosby Beach since 2005. The exhibition there was planned for two years, but a majority of the population opted for a permanent exhibition in 2007.

criticism

Another Place was described as the highlight of the art project "Follow Me - British Art on the Lower Elbe" of the Cuxhavener Kunstverein. Katja Blomberg describes the installation in her article in the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in September 1997.

The installation of the figures on Crosby Beach was initially only planned as a temporary exhibition for two years. Initially, a permit for a permanent exhibition was refused, as negative consequences for people and the environment were feared. There were concerns that people might underestimate the risk of ebb and flow and get stuck in the soft sand. The nature conservation authority also feared that hikers could endanger bird sanctuaries. Local residents feared increased traffic and did not like the fact that the statues were naked. Nevertheless, the city administration decided that the figures should remain permanently installed.

After more than ten years, the installation has become a landmark.

Other works

Gormley took up the subject again in other contexts:

  • Time Horizon 100 figures were set up in 2006 in the Archaeological Park of Scolacium on the edge of an olive grove. These figures look in different directions and therefore have a significantly different aura.
