The Theatro Municipal de São Paulo

The Theatro Municipal de São Paulo is a theater and opera house in São Paulo , Brazil .

It is one of the city's landmarks and is known for its architecture and history . Construction began in 1903 - inspired by the Italian Opera, in particular La Scala in Milan - under the designer Ramos de Azevedo and the two Italian architects Cláudio Rossi and Domiziano Rossi. The house was opened on September 12, 1911 with a performance of the opera Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas . A number of the world's most famous artists such as Maria Callas , Enrico Caruso , Isadora Duncan , Beniamino Gigli , Vaslav Nijinsky , Anna Pawlowa , Arthur Rubinstein , Magda Tagliaferro , Arturo Toscanini and many others performed there in the 20th century . The Theatro Municipal is the seat of the São Paulo Municipal Symphonic Orchestra , the Coral Lírico and the São Paulo Municipal Ballet .

On June 10, 2011, the Theatro Municipal reopened after three years of renovation.
