The Passo del Giogo is an 882 m high Italian pass in the Apennines .
description
The pass is located in the Mugello countryside and runs along the SP 503 Passo del Giogo provincial road . It connects the municipality of Firenzuola in the north of the pass with the village of Scarperia in the south , a district of the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero . Parts of the pass road used to be part of the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello . The Stazione meteorologica di Rifredo Mugello weather station is located near Monte Altuzzo in the municipality of Firenzuola .
Monuments
The pass was part of the Gothic position in World War II . He was attacked by units of the 5th US Army on September 12, 1944 . The German defenders offered fierce resistance for six days before their positions on both sides of the pass were completely taken by the Allies on September 18.
Today there are two war monuments along the pass road, both of which are on the Scarperia side:
- 85th Infantry Division, 338th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army , also known as the Monte Altuzzo Memorial , bronze plaque in the Località Omomorto just below the Monte Altuzzo mountain.
- 91st Division, 363rd Infantry Regiment of the United States Army , monument made of white marble in the Località Omomorto.
In addition, the Centro Documentazione e Ricerche Storiche di Gotica Toscana Onlus (CDRS) , a documentation center and museum , has existed in Località Ponzalla (just north of Scarperia) since 2012 .
