Otto John Schaden (born August 26, 1937 - November 23, 2015 ) was an American Egyptologist . He was head of the excavation Amenmesse Tomb Project of the University of Memphis ( Tennessee ). In addition to his work on the grave of Amenmesse ( KV10 ) in the main wadi in the Valley of the Kings , he also led the excavation of the graves WV23 , WV24 and WV25 in the western valley.

Life

Otto Schaden received his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota , where he taught Middle Egyptian in the early 1970s . 1962–1963 he took part in the Nubian Expedition of the Oriental Institute of Chicago and the following year in the Sudan Expedition . In 1972 his work began in the Valley of the Kings, where he first examined the grave of Eje II (WV23). Since 1992 he has been working on the Amenmesse excavation project, in the course of which his team discovered grave KV63 in March 2005 .

In January 2008, disputes among the excavation team resulted in the University of Memphis ending its collaboration with damage. The project has since continued under the auspices of the Egyptian Antiquities Authority.

Otto Schaden died on November 23, 2015 at the age of 78.
