1967 Daytona 24 hour race
The second Daytona 24-hour race , also the 6th Annual Daytona Continental 24 Hours, Daytona International Speedway , took place on February 4 and 5, 1967 at Daytona International Speedway and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The 1967 Sports Car World Championship began with the Daytona 24-hour race in February . For the second time since 1966 , a 24-hour race was held at Daytona International Speedway . In 1966, Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby had remained victorious on a Ford GT40 Mk.II reported by Carroll Shelby .
Ford came to Daytona with a large crew. In practice, Dan Gurney achieved the fastest lap in a Shelby American Ford Mk.II with a time of 1.55.100 minutes. This time corresponded to an average of 191,779 km / h. The new Chaparral 2F followed just behind, driven by Phil Hill and Mike Spence . The fastest Ferrari followed in third place. A 412P , entered by the North American Racing Team and driven by Pedro Rodríguez and Jean Guichet . On the pole position time lacked only 0.3 seconds from Gurney. Behind it followed P4 - Trailer by Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini . The fastest Porsche in training was the works 906E run by Gerhard Mitter and Jochen Rindt in 16th place, just ahead of teammates Hans Herrmann and Joseph Siffert in the new Porsche 910 . With 2: 04,900 and 2: 05,000 minutes, the gap to the fast Ford and Ferrari was already considerable.
Although the fast Fords set the fastest lap times from the start, the race for the Ford Motor Company ended with a major setback. A manufacturing defect in the ZF transmission caused the failure of almost all cars. Only the vehicle with the number 11 registered by John Wyer , as well as the works cars of Bruce McLaren and Lucien Bianchi and the William Wonder GT40 crossed the finish line in a row in positions six, seven and eight.
Ferrari's triumph
For Ferrari the race ended with a triple victory. Behind the two factory cars from Bandini / Amon and Parkes / Scarfiotti , the North American Racing 412P landed in third place. Under the leadership of the new race director Franco Lini , the success at Daytona was of double importance. Firstly, the success was achieved on the legendary race track of the Daytona 500 and thus on US soil in the home country of its great opponent Ford. And secondly, this victory attracted a lot of public attention and, supported by subsequent promotional activities, helped Ferrari to set new sales records for road vehicles in the United States .
