John Hattendorf

John Brewster Hattendorf (born December 22, 1941 in Western Springs , Illinois ) is an American marine historian. He is a professor at Naval War College , Newport .

Hattendorf studied at Kenyon College ( Bachelor Accounts 1964), at the Brown University ( Master Accounts 1971) and at Pembroke College of University of Oxford , where he received his doctorate in military history 1979th The subject of the dissertation was the British overall strategy in the War of the Spanish Succession . In between he served from 1965 to 1973 as an officer on destroyers in the Vietnam War : on the USS O'Brien (1965–1967), USS Purdy (1969–1971) and USS Fiske (1971–1972). In 1972 he was assigned to the US Naval War College as an instructor and research assistant to the President and promoted to lieutenant. In 1977 he became an assistant professor, now a civilian, and an associate professor in 1981. Since 1983 he has been professor of naval history at Naval War College, where he has also been head of the naval history department and director of the Naval War College Museum since 2003.

He was visiting scholar at the Military History Research Office , the University of Singapore, and Pembroke College, Oxford. Hattendorf received the Caird Medal from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich , the Samuel Eliot Morrison Award from the USS Constitution Museum Foundation, the Mahan Award from the Navy League of the United States and the K. Jack Bauer Award from the North American Society for Oceanic History . From 2006 to 2008 he chaired the US Navy's Advisory Committee on Naval History.

He was Vice President of the Hakluyt Society , is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society , served on the Council of the Navy Records Society and is a corresponding member for the USA of the Society for Nautical Research . In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from Kenyon College.
