Lorenzo Bandini (born December 21, 1935 in Barce , Libya , † May 10, 1967 in Monte Carlo ) was an Italian racing driver .
Career
Lorenzo Bandini gained his first racing experience when he took part in hillclimb races in a borrowed Fiat 1100 in 1957. Just a year later, he first made a name for himself when he won his class at the Mille Miglia in a Lancia Appia Zagato. Then Bandini started with Volpini in Formula Junior until 1960 ; initially as a privateer, later as a driver for the Stanguellini team. His greatest successes during this time were third place in his debut in Siracusa (1958) and victories at the Liberty and Pescara Grand Prix (1960).
In 1961, Mimmo Dei , the team boss of Scuderia Centro Sud , gave Bandini the opportunity to drive a Cooper T51 - Maserati at the Grand Prix of Pau , which was not part of the Automobile World Championship . Bandini made it to the podium in this race and finished third behind Jim Clark and Jo Bonnier . Just two months later, he made his debut at the Belgian Grand Prix . This season he took part in three other world championship races (also on a Cooper-Maserati) ( Great Britain , Germany , Italy ). The sporting highlight of this year was the victory in the sports car race in Pescara.
Bandini signed a contract as a driver with Scuderia Ferrari in 1962 . He mainly competed in sports car races this season, but also took part in three Grand Prix ( Monaco , Germany , Italy ). In Monaco he took third place and thus his first World Cup points. In addition, in August he won the Mediterranean Grand Prix in Enna , which was not part of the World Automobile Championship .
In 1963 , Bandini competed in seven out of ten races. He drove three of them for Scuderia Centro-Sud on BRM , but was back in the Ferrari cockpit for the last four races of the season. The best placings this year were 5th in Great Britain , the USA and South Africa . The sports car season was successful: he finished second in the Targa Florio and also in the Reims 12-hour race alongside John Surtees . Together with Ludovico Scarfiotti , he achieved overall victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Ferrari 250 P.
In 1964 , Bandini was a regular driver alongside John Surtees in the Ferrari Formula 1 team. It should be his most successful season. He collected 23 championship points and made a decisive contribution to winning the constructors’s championship for the team from Maranello . In August he won the Austrian Grand Prix on the airfield course in Zeltweg. Bandini played a somewhat dubious role at the season finale in Mexico when he collided with the BRM of title contender Graham Hill , whose car was damaged. Then he let his slower teammate Surtees pass so that he could secure the driver's world title.
The Ferrari team had little chance in the 1965 season against world champion Jim Clark ( Lotus ) and the strong BRMs of Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart . Bandini and Surtees mostly followed, Bandini was only able to collect 13 points in the ten races of the season. At the Monaco Grand Prix he achieved his best result of the season with 2nd place. Apart from Formula 1, he and Nino Vaccarella won the Targa Florio.
In 1966 , after only two races of the season, Ferrari and John Surtees parted ways. Bandini moved into the role of team leader. The season was not particularly good for the “Reds”, apart from the Ferrari one-two at their home race in Monza , where Bandini's team-mates Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes took the two front positions. Bandini scored a total of twelve World Cup points, his season highlight was once again the Monaco Grand Prix , where he finished second again.
1967 got off to a promising start for Bandini and Ferrari. Together with his teammate Chris Amon , he won the 24-hour race in Daytona and the 1000 km race in Monza in a Ferrari 330P4 sports car. In March he finished second in the final race at Brands Hatch, which was not part of the World Automobile Championship .
1967 accident
At the Monaco Grand Prix in 1967 on May 7th, Bandini had an accident with his Ferrari 312F1 on lap 82. Lying in second position and trying to close the gap to the leading Brabham driver Denis Hulme , the apparently exhausted and increasingly inattentive driving Bandini brushed against the At the entrance of the port chicane, the track boundary, whereupon the car at the exit of the chicane turned left off the track, hit a bollard secured only by bales of straw and caught fire. The many bales of straw and leaking gasoline caused a large fire that the sparsely equipped fire brigade could not cope with. On the second lap of the race, Bandini had already collided slightly; the engine of the car was damaged and lost oil all along the way without Bandini noticing. As a result, his Ferrari drove more slowly in the final laps. The accident occurred while trying to get faster again.
Bandini was only released after three minutes and died three days later from his severe burns. After this accident, the racing distance in Monaco was reduced from 100 to 80 laps in 1968.
Bandini drove a total of 42 Grand Prix races and achieved one victory, eight podium places, one pole position and two fastest laps.
